Agricultural Market of Azerbaijan
The territory of the Azerbaijan Republic constitutes 86.6 thousand square kilometers (52.3% - lands good for agriculture, 12% - forests, 1.6% - water basin, 34.1% - other lands), it is situated in the eastern part of Southern Caucasus, on the shore of the Caspian Sea.
Azerbaijan is one of the few world countries which have 9 of the 11 climatic zones.
Plant cultivation is one of the main production branches of agriculture. Auspicious natural and land resources of Azerbaijan have the potential of satisfying the need of the population for these vitally important food products, allowing production of a diverse assortment of agricultural products in different seasons.
In 1998, the farms were freed from all taxes except the land tax.
According to the data provided by the Ministry of Economical Development, the average figure reflecting increase in the production of agricultural products is 9-10%. Thus, over the past few years the figures reflecting an increase in the production of agricultural products were as follows: production of vegetable products - 35%, fruits and berries – 13.1%, meat and meat products – 23.6%, milk and dairy products – 13.3%, eggs – 23.6%, and wool – 11.0%.
By presidential order of 2004, the Open Joint Stock Society “Agroleasing” was created and certain additional measures in the field of broadening leasing in the agrarian sector were defined. In order to organize the activity of the “Agroleasing” OJS, approximately $60 million was allotted from the state budget for 2005-2006.
The Presidential Decree ¹24 of 11.02.2004 “On ratification of the State Program of social-economical development (2004-2008) of the regions of the Azerbaijan Republic” set the 10-15% growth rate to be achieved in all branches of the Gross Domestic Product structure, including in the agricultural branch and set the volume of investment from all financial sources (up to $16.8 billion), 60% of which will be spent on the development of the regions.
Azerbaijan fully satisfies domestic demand for the majority of agricultural products. Apart from that, the geographical location of the country allows profitable export of the agricultural products not only to the neighbouring markets of Russia, Iran, Turkey and Georgia, but also to the world markets.
