The Nature of Abkhazia

Paradise on the earth» - this is how the Abkhazians refer to their country. And there is some sense to that. Geographically Abkhazia is located in a unique place – in the subtropical belt, between the mountain ridge of the Major Caucasus protecting it from cold northern winds and tender Black Sea coast in the south. What can be better than living on the seaside where the sun always shines and skies are blue, the air is fresh with the sea breezes and the weather is always fine, looking at exotic palm trees, slim cypresses and white mountain tops. Paradise-like place!

The nature there is truly unique. It combines seascapes, mountain slopes, raging waterfalls, rough rivers, transparent lakes, Alpine meadows and relic woods, picturesque gorges, mysterious caves.

The uniqueness of Abkhazia is in its being situated in all climatic zones – from moist subtropics on the seaside to permanent snow on mountain tops.

The mountains are dominant - 64% of the territory. The highest peak of Abkhazia is Mount Dombai-Ulgen on the border with Russia . (4,046 m).

The rivers of Abkhazia are short and full - the Psou, the Bzyb', the Gumista, the Kelasuri, the Kodori, the Inguri. The most picturesque lakes can be found in the mountains - Lake Ritsa , Lake Amtkel , Lake Inkit , Lake Gluboye (Blue).

The vegetation of Abkhazia is represented by broad-leaved forests (oaks, beeches, hornbeams and chestnuts) which cover the massifs. Palm trees, oleanders, cedars, magnolias, cypresses reign all over the seaside.

The climate of Abkhazia is mild humid subtropical. Average temperature in January is + 5C , July - +22+ 24C .
