In the 1 st century AD Christianity penetrated Adzharia. However, Turkey, which dominated there for almost three centuries, strenuously pursued Islamization of Christian population. Today the number of Moslems in Adzharia makes about 30 %. The live mostly part in the rural areas. They build and restore mosques. According to the latest statistic information there are 62 mosques in the Republic including the one in Batumi .
Adzharians are tolerant toward the representatives of all faiths living in the Republic. The followers of each belief enjoy the right of religious freedom provided and guaranteed by the Constitution. The religions there are Orthodox, Muslim, Catholic, Judaic and others.
There a temple for every faith in Batumi . There is even a synagogue. For the first time the Gregorian church was returned to local Armenians. There is a Roman Catholic Church despite the fact that there are only about one hundred Catholics in the Republic. Adzharia has 4 Orthodox temples, 3 of them in Batumi. |
