Gagra Landmarks - Khashupse Fortress

In the settlement of Tsandripsh vicinities on the bank of a small river with the same name, on a wood-covered rock you will thee the ruins of Khashupse fortress. It is the largest fortress of the early medieval period in Abkhazia. This fortress constructed about thousand years ago for centuries protected the gorge and the valleys of the river Khashupse from the attacks of aggressive nomads from the mountain side and the intrusion of enemy armies from the sea. The fortress remnants include bottom parts of the walls made from roughly cut stones, the watch tower with loopholes, the remains of the palace, dwelling and auxiliary structures, stone cisterns for water storage, and massive stone stairs. Not far from Khashupse fortress you can see the ruins of an ancient settlement grown with barbed bushes which still amazes with its monumental structure. The settlement wall stands 10 meters tall and in some places is reinforced by three multi-tier towers.
