Gagra Landmarks - Old Gagra

The picturesque Old Gagra area stretches along Narta Prospekt – the city's main street and is bordered by the rivers Zhoekvara and Tsykherva. This is where all historical landmarks of the city are concentrated. On the left bank of the Zhoekvara right by the road there is Abaata fortress which was built in the 5 th century and functioned until the 19 th century. It is partially ruined , partially rebuilt . A small 6 th – 7 th -century temple made of roughly cut boulders stands in the middle.

Old Gagra features the chic building of Gagripsh Restaurant with the clock (early 20 th century). It was there that the opening of the resort was pompously celebrated by the Emperor's family on January 9, 1903 .

In the centre of Old Gagra there is another landmark - the Colonnade (a picturesque arch in Mauritian style - a semicircle surrounding a fountain platform).
