On the way from Gudauta to NewAthos there is the village of Abgarkhuk . In its eastern part over the river Aapsta towers Abakhvatsa fortress. It has been standing there since the 11 th – 13 th centuries when numerous fortresses and castles were being constructed in the vicinities of Gudauta. The fortifications of Abakhvatsa (3 m high, 1 m thick) surround the 600 sq. m territory on the wood grown rock with precipices on all sidesFrom the northwest the fortress is protected by the wall which hangs over a deep ravine. It is impregnable from the southeast too: there the rock which it leans on finishes with a 45-meter precipice. On the precipice edge there is well preserved 8-meter four-level quadrangular tower to the right from the loophole. |
