Another landmark in the vicinities of Gudauta is Khasanata-Abaa fortress with Bzyb watchtower. It was presumably constructed in the 9th – 10th centuries for the purpose of interception enemies moving on the mountain paths. The fortress is formed by powerful polygonal wall of one and a half meter thickness. The tower adjoining the wall had two levels. The second level was covered by a wooden ceiling which simultaneously served as a floor for the patrol platform crowning the tower. The fortress stands on the elevation at the height of 200 meters above the river level. It is surrounded by a thick deciduous wood. |
