Pitsunda Landmarks - Pitsunda Temple

The main place of interest of Pitsunda accessible to all tourists is the magnificent temple of the 10 th century which was used to be the residence of bishops. The temple is very similar to a medieval fortress. The temple building is very interestingly in terms of its architecture. Being square at the base it ends on the one side with the semicircle tower crowned by an umbrella-type dome with two small semi-turrets on both sides. In the central part of the temple there is the round tower with the same umbrella-type dome. The temple territory is surrounded by thick fortifications. The modern condition of the temple is the result of the 19 th- century restoration works which preserved the 15 th –century frescos.

In the 1970s the temple received a German organ – it was then second largest in the USSR . Now the temple is a stage for opera singers and choirs.
