Sukhum is the capital city of Republic of Abkhazia. It is cozily situated in a picturesque bay of the Black Sea coast being its main sea gate and resort area. Historians consider Dioskuri, the legendary city which was founded by ancient Greeks and was a part of Colchis kingdom, as the primogenitor of Sukhum. The history of Dioscuri had lasted almost 500 years until it completely disappeared under the waters of the Black Sea. Now it is difficult to tell what is was - a beautiful legend or a fact of history. The only known fact is that in the early AD Romans built a small fortress, Sebastopolis, on this place which later was repossessed by Byzantines. But those were only the starting pages of the city's rich millennia-old history. The city has 2,500 and this fact makes it rather attractive from the point of view of historical tourism. One the territory of Sukhum and its vicinities are located the monuments of the antique, Roman, and Turkish periods. These are the ruins of Roman Sebastopolis fortress, Bagrat's castle, Beslet bridge, the towers of Abkhazian wall, the ruins of old temples, fortresses, and monasteries.
It is worth mentioning that for its entire history Sukhum was repeatedly destroyed and restored. Today's city is an example the 19 th -century town-planning. However, the effect of sightseeing can be doubled by spending some time on the Black Sea coast of Sukhum. Its reputation as the best health improving resort Sukhum received in the 19 th century. In the days of imperial Russia numerous health resorts were built there as the climate of Sukhum is considered optimal for treatment of pulmonary and cardiac diseases.
The climate of Sukhum is subtropical, very warm and humid. The sun shines for almost 250 days a year. The average summer temperature is +23 Ñ ; winter - +7,5 Ñ ; spring and autumn +15 - +17 Ñ . The air there is so pure and transparent that early in the morning you can even discern the outlines of Adzharian Mountains!
