The museum was founded in 1915. Its collections contain natural, archaeological historical and ethnographic objects of Abkhazia. Many of them are absolutely unique and valuable. For example the museum's garden has one of Eshera dolmens – ancient tombstones which can be found on the territory of Abkhazia. Right next to it there is a dwelling complex imitating traditional Abkhazian household. The museum has the 5 th -century BC marble gravestone, a Greek warrior's helmet, huge collection of weaponry etc. The trip around the museum will give you a chance to experience the rich history of Abkhazia from antiquity to present days. The nature section displays paleontological finds, samples of fauna and flora, minerals, the Black Sea and Abkhazian rivers fauna.
