The natural ornament of the capital of Abkhazia is located directly downtown. It is the former Botanical garden of the Academy of Sciences of Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic which used to be the one of the best among similar arboretums in terms of collection. Today it is just the most unique place of interest of entire Abkhazia. The garden was founded in 1840. It occupies only 7 hectares but can be compared to an original museum of the plants collected from subtropical areas of the globe. Here you will see more than 5,000 kinds, forms and grades of plants from the whole planet. There are tea bushes, citron and olive trees, various palm trees. One of its main attractions is a 250-year-old Caucasian linden which had been growing there before the garden appeared.
