The theater building is an example of the early 20 th -century architecture. It was built in 1912 as “Grand-Hotel” with the 670-seat theater. The hotel complex included the restaurant, the garage with cars for rent, Olympia Movie Theater, the casino and two stores. In 1921 the theatre was named the First State Theater of Abkhazia. In 1942 both buildings the hotel and the theater burned down but in 1952 were restored. The contemporary theater house capacity is 700 seats . The beautiful theater square is decorated with the fountain with mythic water-spewing gryphonsr.
