The highest point of the city (201 m) – Mount Sukhum (Samata in Abkhazian) is in the north-eastern outskirts. Mount Sukhum has two tops – one is seen behind the other. Hence the other name – the Double - Headed . One top is occupied by a TV tower, the other – by the rotunda of the restaurant that used to be there. On the mountain slope there is the Pantheon of Abkhazian writers and public figures with the latest graves of the 1992-1993 war heroes. In the early 1950s a big 30-hectare park with rare tree species and decorative flora was planted on the slopes.
There you will see Himalayan cedars, thujas, feijoas, and various species of roses. The forest park on Mount Sukhum is the favorite vacation spot of tourists and local residents. You can reach the mountain top using the asphalted road. This trip offers a magnificent view of the city, its green vicinities and blue Sukhum bay. |
