Hospitality Industry in Kazakhstan
From 2003 to 2006, the number of hotels in Kazakhstan increased by 90%. In 2006, 871 enterprises serviced about 20 million people for a total amount of 30 billion tenge (US$ 240 million). At the moment, key clients of most hotels include business tourists; 90% of clients represent business tourism, while a mere 10% is a thin floe coming for entertainment and recreation. By 2007-2008, the Republic of Kazakhstan plans to complete construction of the following hotels: Kempinski, Radisson SAS Medeo, and Marriott.
The year 2006 was a very productive year for the restaurant business in Kazakhstan. New places opened almost twice a month. In 2006, about 30 new places appeared in Kazakhstan, of which 8 restaurants of Class A opened in Almaty. Attendance in restaurants and bars grows every year thanks to the economic growth and better solvency of the population.
As of March 2007, Kazakhstan had 754 super and hypermarkets, which exceeds the 2006 figure by 134. According to official statistics, there are 29 super and hypermarkets per million of population in the country. For comparison, at the same time, Russia had 19 super and hypermarkets per million of population.
