Telecommunication Industry in Kazakhstan

The World Bank and International Monetary Fund have acknowledged Kazakhstan as one of the fastest developing economies in the world, and this led to President Nursultan Nazarbayev's recent announcement that the republic would become one of the 50 most developed countries in the world and, in the next seven years, be among the top ten oil exporters.

Mukhtar Tileberdi, Kazakh ambassador to Malaysia adds:
"One of our priorities now is to promote ICT development… We are setting up an ICT Park in Almaty and plan to establish special economic zones in various parts of the country… Economically, we want to follow the Malaysian model of development."

  • Economic growth has been remarkable - Gross Domestic Product grew by 9% last year while the forecast for 2006 and 2007 is at 9.1% and 9.4% respectively.
  • Construction of 10,000 km National Information Superhighway makes Kazakhstan main communications transit centre.
  • Kazakhstan is ranked 5th in the world in terms of oil and gas reserves as well as other natural resources. Tengiz – the 6th largest oil bubble in the world containing up to 25 billion barrels of oil. Oil development has resulted in rapid economic growth.
  • Since independence, there has been major foreign investment in the Caspian oil sector. From 2004 onwards the volume of direct foreign investments in Kazakhstan should exceed US$5 billion per year
  • Telecommunications is the most dynamic, fast growing and prospective market in Kazakhstan. According to the Economist Intelligence Unit, the market could be worth $10 billion by 2010. The key growth drivers of the telecom sector include the deployment of fibre optic networks across Kazakhstan to be finished by Kazakhtelecom by 2007, efforts to improve international connectivity and increase mobile and fixed line subscribers, the continuing digitalisation of communication, the further improvement of telecom legislation, and the movement toward WTO accession.
