Terracotta Army

In 1974 while digging a well local peasants discovered out one of the famous archeological finds of the 20th century, the Terracotta Army of Qin Shi Huang, thousand full-size soldiers made from the burnt clay with horses standing in battle order and protecting the peace of Emperor Qin Shi Huang. The find became the sensation and was named the Eighth Wonder.

The underground army was found 1.5 km to the east from the tomb of the emperor. The further excavation discovered over a hundred wooden fighting chariots and more than 40 thousand units of bronze weapons, about 8,000 ceramic soldiers and horses. The first ditch is the biggest, its area is 12 thousand sq. m., there are more than six thousand soldiers and horses; the second ditch occupies a half of the first ditch; there were more than thousand soldiers and horses; the third ditch is the smallest (500 sq. m.) with only 68 soldiers.

According to the archeologists, the two ditches symbolize the lifetime protection of the emperor Qin Shi Huang the third – General Headquarters.

The frozen stone armada is amazing in its coloring. All soldiers stand in battle order. All poses, all gestures of the soldiers accurately correspond to the ancient Chinese book of war art. Many of them carry the real 2,000-year-old weapons. The statues are slightly taller than real soldiers, about 196 cm. Their faces are absolutely different: ancient sculptors managed to convey their moods and emotions.
