It has been found in the store-rooms of The State Art Museum of Uzbekistan in the course of restoration work. The masterpiece of the great Italian artist of the XVI century was revealed under a paint coat of another picture and was preserved in a very good condition.
The picture was acquired from the collection of the last Russian emperor Nikolai II after the Great October Revolution. Its authenticity is being actively challenged today by international and domestic experts, who divided into groups. Some experts, including the Tashkent Museum staff are convinced in its authenticity considering it an author’s reduplication of The Lamentation of Christ kept in the Russian Hermitage since1772. The others challenge its authenticity, supposing that it might be a copy by another Venetian artist of the same epoch.
Whatever it is but the picture found will be set to show in the Tashkent State Museum of Art on 27 November 2012 at 04:00PM, where all who wishes can enjoy it.
