Restoration of fresco “Ambassadors” has began in Samarkand

Samarkand began restoration of fresco “Ambassadors” Today, on 2 May 2014 Samarkand has started restoration work of the Sogdian masterpiece dating back to the VII century AD – world-famous fresco “Ambassadors” (also known as “Painting of Ambassadors”) – reports press agency UzDaily. The project is financed by South Korea, the U.S., France and Switzerland. A solemn ceremony to mark the restoration work to start was attended by Uzbek officials and ambassadors of project member countries.

The fresco Ambassadors was found in 1965 by chance and sent to the Afrasiab Museum for safekeeping. The fresco depicts King Vakhurman and ambassadors from different countries, including China. This work of art is one of the evidences of prosperity of the Silk Road and actively developing diplomatic relations between countries located on it.

The restoration work which will take four years will be conducted by a team of professionals led by the French specialist Geraldine Frey in cooperation with the department of chemical engineering restoration headed Marina Reutova, of the Institute of Archaeology at the Uzbek Academy of Sciences.
