Heavenly treat: Khiva starts August with melon festival

Melon Festival will take place in KhivaPress Office of “UzbekTourism” announced the sweetest event of the Uzbek summer in Khiva - Trade Fair "Gurvak - symbol of Khorezm melons". Melon Festival opens on 9th August, 2014 in the “Kokhna Ark" Square of “Itchan-Kala” the State Sanctuary Museum. During the fair, guests will choose the most delicious melon, and participants will demonstrate mastery of cutting melons and ability to distinguish melon sorts, and will compete in the methods of drying and storage of the melon in winter.

In addition to sweet melons other gifts of Khorezm summer like pumpkins, watermelons, apples, pears, peaches, grapes and dried fruits will be presented at the fair. In the framework of the fair public can enjoy a festival of folklore and ethnographic groups, young pop singers contest, theatrical performances and an exhibition of national craft works.

Sweet full flavor melon is one of the main symbols of summer. Melons are not only very tasty, but also healthy in any form: fresh, jerked or dried. In general, about 36 varieties of melons are grown in various regions of Uzbekistan. Sort called gurvak, which fair is named in honor of, is well spread in Khorezm and Karakalpakstan.
