“Askiya” included to the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCOThe art of wit “askiya” was included to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, reports the press-service of UNESCO. Representative List includes elements that characterize the diversity of the intangible heritage and contributes to an understanding of its importance for all mankind.

“Askiya” is a distinct genre of Uzbek verbal folk art organized in the form of a dialogue between two or more participants contesting on witticism around a particular theme. Participants should be able to improvise, be able to give quick and smart replies. Despite its humoristic form, “askiya” plays an invaluable role in informing the population on questions related to social tendencies and events, watching the everyday life and attracting attention to important issues.

In total, during the current session of the Committee for Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage, the List also included 34 elements: including armenian lavash. Taking in account new inclusions, the List totals 314 positions.
