Natural and raw material resources of Uzbekistan

• Uzbekistan has a unique natural and raw material resources potential
• More than 2800 fields and perspective ingresses of minerals, about 100 types of mineral raw materials among which 65 are used in industry and agriculture are found in the Republic.
• About 1000 fields including fields of oil, gas and condensate, precious, non-ferrous, ferrous and radioactive metals, coal, mining and mining chemical feedstock, construction materials for various purposes, fresh and mineral subsurface water were prospected. For now only 45 % of the prospected fields are put into operation. The total mineral and raw material potential of the country is equal to approximately US $ 3,5 trillion.
• Attraction of foreign investments and establishment of joint ventures have become extremely important constituents of the development of mining industry of Uzbekistan especially in recent years.
• Currently Goskomgeologiya (State Committee of Geology) of Uzbekistan is developing a range of projects with different foreign companies.
• More than 440 mines, pits, open pits, oil and gas mines, plants etc. operate on the basis of prepared resources in the Republic
• The Republic has significant resources of precious and less-common metals such as silver, uranium, copper, molybdenum, lead, zinc, tungsten and lithium. The Republic occupies 10th - 11th places in the world by the resources of copper and 7th - 8th places by the resources of uranium.
• Reconstruction of old production plants and construction of new up-to-date production plants are carried out at a rapid rate due to creation of auspicious conditions for investments in the economy.
• In 2005 the most considerable increase of production equal to 28,2% was registered in Uzbekistan in mechanical engineering, ferrous metallurgy and coal industry.

• Uzbekistan owns enormous opportunities and potential in the sphere of gold mining.
• Uzbekistan is the 9th largest world producer of gold, 2nd among 15 former Soviet republics, and also the biggest producer of gold per capita.
• Gold mining industry is one of the most attractive ones in Uzbekistan for foreign investors. Actively developing from the very start, having a rich raw material base and constantly extending due to advanced search of new fields and also having a high-skilled staff the industry ranks among strategic and export-oriented industries. It includes five gold mines, three gold extraction plants and one grinding and burdening unit for production of raw materials for copper production. Kochbulak, Kyzylalmasay, Pirmirab, Guzaksay, Kauldy, Mardjanbulak, Zarmitan and Karakutan fields are among important and already being exploited fields.
• 41 gold fields including 33 gold ore fields were discovered in the Republic. However at present time only 9 fields that give the possibility to produce about 80 tons of gold are being actively exploited. The volume of prospected and confirmed resources of gold in Uzbekistan is equal to about 2,1 thousand tons. The total resources are equal to approximately 3,35 thousand tons.
• The production of gold in the country is concentrated at 4 largest enterprises such as Navoi and Almalyk mining industrial complexes (NGMK and AGMK); the rest two complexes were established with the support of foreign investments namely JV Zarafshan Newmont (jointly with Newmont Mining Corporation – NEM.N) and JV “Amantaytau Goldfields” (jointly with Oxus Gold plc – OXS.L.) Navoi and Almalyk mining metallurgical complexes are the largest local producers of gold.
• Today the development of the industry and increase of its investment appeal are carried out in the framework of the Program of extension of export potential of the production of precious metals. The Program provides the increase of production of precious metals 2,7 times more which will allow to increase export potential from US$ 44 million in 1997 to US$ 123 million in 2005.
• The Program of the development of the industry provides reconstruction of gold extraction plant at Mardjanbulak mine for the purpose of inclusion of refractory sulfide gold-bearing ores. The increase of the production volume of gold-bearing fluxing ore at Kauldyn gold mining pit is carried out owing to construction and putting Alturpak site and the second line of the crushing site into operation. li> By calculations of experts of Goskomgeologiya of Uzbekistan the attraction of foreign investments and implementation of planned projects will allow to establish more than two thousand additional workplaces. Newest technologies of extraction and processing of gold-bearing ores, providing optimal consumption of energy and raw materials for contemporary level will be involved in the industry.
