Tour to Kunya-Urgench, Turkmenistan

Kunya-Urgench is an ancient city that was once located on the crossroad of trade routes which connected China and Europe over several centuries. The city reached its full flourish in X-XIII centuries, when it was the capital of the huge and prosperous Khorezmshakh State. Life was bustling there with bazaars full of foreign merchandise, mosques and madrasahs attracting scholars from all over the Islamic world. Later, the city was less fortunate: it experienced a terrible invasion of Genghiz Khan Army, conquest of Tamerlane, and became deserted in XVI century due to the change of Amu-Darya River watercourse. Despite these adversities many examples of unique medieval Islamic architecture are still preserved in the city. This tour offers you an insight to the rich history of Kunya-Urgench which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
