Karakol, formerly Przhevalsk, is located on the east coast of Issyk-Kul Lake, on the ancient caravan route to Western China. Its population is just over 63,000e (the Kirghiz - 60.09%, the Slavs - 22.63%, Uzbeks - 3,5%). The city is notable for the Russian colonial architecture of the 19th century, numerous gardens, flower beds and interesting architectural monuments (wooden church and a mosque built without nails).
