For twenty days you will make a tour for 20 centuries ago and visit ancient Buddhist centers and cities of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The route crosses the picturesque mountain pass Kamchik to the Fergana Valley and hot sands of the great deserts. You will see the Akhal Teke horses, berhymed by Herodotus, and now enriching the stables of kings and presidents. A walk by the Dinosaur Plateau, where you can touch paw prints left by pre-historic giants on the stones is ahead of you. An acquaintance with the medieval monuments of Bukhara and Samarkand will assure you that everything written in A Thousand Nights and a Night is true. You can climb to the high minarets of Khiva, 40-m ruins of Ak-Saray palace, extant walls of the Greek-Bactrian kingdom Kyrk-Kyz You will watch how the masters make paper using ancient technologies in Samarkand, weave silk in Margilan, paint ceramics and make woolen carpets in Rishtan. You will have an opportunity to spend a night near a crater, burning for dozens of years in the very heart of the Karakum desert. You will follow the route of Alexander the Great, but see much more than him.

 

Tour itinerary:

Day 1: Ashgabat – arrival
 
Arrive in Ashgabat. Transfer to the hotel. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 2: Ashgabat
 
Start the day with a sightseeing tour in Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan that has recently been noted by the Guinness Book of World Records as having the most white marble-clad buildings in the world. During the city tour you will explore an archeological site of Old Nisa (included in UNESCO World Heritage list) and Spiritual Mosque, one of the biggest mosques in Central Asia. You will visit the National Museum of History, the Monument of Neutrality, Presidential Square, Ertugrul Gazi Mosque and newly built Independence Park. Intense and interesting excursion also includes a stopover at the Akhalteke horse stables and Lenin Monument. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 3: Ashgabat – Mary – Merv – Turkmenabat
 
Take a morning flight to Mary. Departure at 07:00, arrival at 07:40. Drive to Merv, an ancient city that was a major center of international trade and crafts located on the Silk Road (40 km, 50 min.). Discover the historical reserve by visiting Erk Gala, Gyaur Gala, Sultan Kala, Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar, Mausoleum of Ibn Zaid, the remains of Castle – fortresses “Keshk” and tombs of Guifari and Bureida. In the afternoon depart to Turkmenabat (200 km, 4 h. 30 min. drive). Overnight at the hotel.

Day 4: Turkmenabat – Koytendag
 
In the morning, depart to Koytendag (480 km, 11-12 h.). All day drive road through Lebap region, stop on the way to see Astana-baba and Almaberdar mausoleums. In the evening, arrive to Kugitang mountains region and to tourist lodge in Koytendag. Overnight in a tourist lodge.

Day 5: Koytendag – Kugitang – Koytendag
 
All day sightseeing in the Kugitang Mountains. Enjoy the waterfall, gorge, Kyrk Gyz cave, Dinosaur Plateau – some decades ago the inner layer of the mountain appeared due to the surface rock displacement opening the picture left by dinosaur family on a soil not yet turned to stone. Four footprint paths can be seen clearly – three left by adults and one probably by a baby dinosaur. Picnic lunch. Return to the tourist lodge.

Day 6: Koytendag – Turkmenabat
 
Drive back to Turkmenabat (480 km, 11-12 hours). En route visit Kaynar-Baba Lake with the hydrogen sulphide spring and a holy fish which can be seen in the lake. Continue to Turkmenabat crossing Amu Darya River. Arrive in Turkmenabat, check in to the hotel. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 7: Turkmenabat – Bukhara
 
In the morning transfer to Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan border point (45 km, 1 hour). Proceed to customs and passport control on both sides. Cross 1.5 km. long neutral zone between two border points. After passing Uzbekistan border post meet your driver. Transfer to Bukhara (100 km, 1 h. 30 min.). Arrival in Bukhara, check in to the hotel. Free time in Old City. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 8: Bukhara
 
Enjoy a walking sightseeing tour with a guide in Old City. Visit Lyabi-Khauz Ensemble, Magoki-Attori Mosque, Chor-Minor Madrasah, trade domes, Kalyan Minaret, Kalyan Mosque and Miri-Arab Madrasah, Ulugbek and Abdulazizkhan madrasahs, Ark Fortress, Bolo-Khauz Mosque, Ismail Samani and Chashma-Ayub mausoleums. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 9: Bukhara – Samarkand
 
Continue sightseeing tour with a guide. Drive out of the city to Sitorai Mokhi-Khosa – summer residence of Bukhara’s last emir. Head to Mausoleum of Bakhouddin Naqshbandi and Chor-Bakr Necropolis. In the afternoon depart to Samarkand (280 km, 4 hours’ drive). Stop on the way at Caravanserai Rabat-i-Malik dating back to 11th century. Arrive in Samarkand late in the afternoon, check in to your hotel. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 10: Samarkand
 
Meet your guide and driver at hotel lobby and start sightseeing. Visit spectacular Registan Square, remains of Bibi-Khanum Mosque, Siab Bazaar, Ulugbek Observatory, Shakhi-Zinda Necropolis and Gur-Emir Mausoleum – authentic shrine of Tamerlane. Overnight at the hotel.
Duration of sightseeing tour: 6-7 hours
Day 11: Samarkand
 
Check-out from the hotel till noon. Continue city tour: visit Afrasiab Museum and the tomb of Saint Daniel. Then drive to Konigil village to explore traditional way of making Samarkand paper from mulberry. Enjoy free time with car and driver at your disposal. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 12: Samarkand – Shakhrisabz – Termez
 
In the morning depart Samarkand and drive to Shakhrisabz (90 km, 2 h.). Have a short city tour in Shakhrisabz. Visit Mausoleum of Jahongir in Dor-us Siodat Memorial Complex, remains of Ak-Saray Palace, Dor-ut Tilavat Ensemble with Kok-Gumbaz Mosque and burial vault of Tamerlane’s father. In the afternoon continue driving to Termez (290 km, 5 h.). Arrive in Termez, check in to the hotel. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 13: Termez – Tashkent
 
Start sightseeing in ancient Buddhist center and one of the oldest cities in Central Asia – Termez. Drive out of the city to explore Zurmalа Tower – Buddha's stupa, Mausoleum of Al-Hakim at-Termezi, Buddhist archaeological site of Fayaz-Tepe, Kampyr-Tepe – Greco-Bactrian Kingdom fortress. Return to Termez for a city tour in Old Termez: visit Kyrk-Kyz Fortress, Kokildor-Ota Khanaka, and Sultan Saodat Ensemble – a summer residence of Samani rulers. Visit Archaeology Museum to explore exhibits discovered on the territory of Termez and its surroundings. In the evening transfer to the airport for the evening flight to Tashkent. Upon arrival transfer to hotel. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 14: Tashkent
 
Meet your guide to start sightseeing in the capital of Uzbekistan, the biggest city in Central Asia. Visit Old City part of Tashkent with Khast-Imam Complex where the world famous Quran of Caliph Uthman – Ottoman has been preserved. In Khast-Imam visit Madrasah of Barak-Khan, Tillya Sheykh Mosque, Mausoleum of the Saint Abu Bakr Kaffal Shashi and the Islamic Institute of Imam al-Bukhari. Explore Chorsu Bazaar. Then take a ride on Tashkent Metro to city center with Amir Timur Square, Independence Square and Applied Arts Museum. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 15: Tashkent – Dangara – Kokand – Fergana
 
Drive to Fergana Valley (320 km, 4 h. 30 min. drive till Fergana city).The steep road which connects Fergana Valley with the rest of Uzbekistan runs via picturesque mountain pass Kamchik (2267 m. above the sea level). The first stop will be at Dangara village to visit the house of a well-known woodcarver, the late master Qadirjon Khaidarov. In the afternoon continue driving to Kokand where you will visit the Khudayar-Khan Palace, Jami Mosque, Kamol-Kazy Madrasah, Damai-Shakhon Necropolis and Madari-Khan Mausoleum. Continue driving to Fergana city. Visit Akhmad Al-Fergani Park in Fergana. Check in to the hotel. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 16: Fergana – Margilan – Rishtan – Tashkent
 
Visit Yodgorlik Silk factory in Margilan where you can see production process of silk with traditional inimitable Ikat patterns. Continue to Said Akhmad-Khoja Madrasah. If it is Thursday or Sunday drive to Kumtepa Bazaar, the biggest one in Fergana Valley. In the afternoon drive to Rishtan and visit a pottery workshop. Continue to the house of craftsman Bakhrom-aka, who manufactures handmade wool carpets (Ok Yer village, Kumarik mahalla). After Ok Yer village return to Tashkent. Transfer to the hotel. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 17: Tashkent – Urgench – Khiva
 
Early morning transfer to the airport for flight to Urgench (1093 km, 1 h. 40 min.). Departure at 07:50, arrival at 09:30. Transfer to the hotel in Khiva (30 km, 35 min.). Later proceed for guided walking sightseeing tour in UNESCO World Heritage site Itchan-Kala Fortress. Visit Mukhammad Aminkhan Madrasah, Mukhammad Rahimkhan Madrasah, Kalta Minor, Kunya-Ark, Juma Mosque, Tash-Khovli Palace, Pakhlavan Makhmud Mausoleum, Minaret of Islam Khoja. Free time in the afternoon. Overnight at hotel.

Day 18: Khiva – Kunya-Urgench – Darvaza gas crater
 
In the morning drive to Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan border point Shavat-Dashoguz (60 km, 1 h.). Go through border formalities on both checkpoints. Cross 1.5 km neutral zone (transportation may not be available). Meet your Turkmenistan guide and drive to Kunya-Urgench (100 km, 1 h. 30 min.). Visit mausoleums of Turabek Khanum, Sultan Tekesh, Sultan Il Arslan, Najmuddin-Kubra, Sultan Ali. Discover the Kutlug-Timur Minaret and Kyrk Molla hill. In the afternoon drive to Darvaza gas crater located in the middle of Karakum desert (270 km, 4 h.). Set up the camp. Enjoy a delicious fire-cooked meal for dinner near the burning gas crater. Overnight in tents.

Day 19: Darvaza – Ashgabat
 
After camp style breakfast depart to Ashgabat (280 km, 4 h.). On the way stop at Erbent village to witness life of locals surrounded by desert. Arrive in Ashgabat, check-in to hotel. Free time. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 20: Ashgabat
 
Check-out from the hotel at noon. Free time until transfer to Ashgabat International Airport. Departure.
