TransCaspian 2009
In 2009 Azerbaijan will remain a country with the most dynamic economy in CIS
Azerbaijan will remain the country with most dynamic economy in CIS, says the UN’s World Economic Situation and Prospects 2009 Report. The report also notes that the national economy will grow by 14%.
The world economy is expected to grow by 1 %. Meanwhile, the Russian economy will grow 4.8 per cent, which is only followed by Georgia where GDP is expected to grow 4.5%, Kazakhstan (4%) and Ukraine (2.1%).
Why TransCaspian?
In the January through October period of 2008, the volume of GDP totaled US$ 40.1 billions, which is by 12.7% more than in the analogous period of the last year and by US$ 4.6 billions more than in January-September. As stated by the International Monetary Fund, Azerbaijan has the highest GDP rate among the CIS countries in 2008.
In January-October of 2008, US$ 8.9 billions of investment was made into the economy of the country, with 23.5% of this figure targeted at the development of the transport sector.
The forecast for 2009 shows that the state budget income and expenses are expected at the level of US$ 15.1 billions and US$ 15.3 billions respectively. Two billion USD will be invested into the development of the transport sector in Azerbaijan in 2009.
According to the Ministry of Transport, in 2008-2012 Azerbaijan intends to invest approximately US$ 1 billion into the development of railroads. The President of Azerbaijan ordered to develop a railroad development program due to the expected increase in transportation volumes, particularly, after completion of construction work within the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars project in 2009.
In January- September 2008, 35.6 million tons of cargo were transported through the Azerbaijan segment of the Europe-Caucasus-Asia transportation channel, which is by 2.4 more than in the same period of last year. The volume of cargo transportation through this channel made up 26.5% of all cargo transportation in the country, with 55.3% of cargo transported by railway, 31.2% - by automobile and 13.5% - by sea transport.
As reported by the Ministry of Transport, 664 large and medium size buses were imported to Azerbaijan in 2008.
Azerbaijan is recognized as a leading country in terms of economic reforms. According to the Report of the World Bank and International Financial Corporation Doing Business – 2009, Azerbaijan advanced from the 96th place to the 33rd place, having made an unprecedented in the history of the Report leap among the countries rated by acceptability of the business climate.
In the framework of the five-year state program of regional development, it is planned to continue further strengthening of road transportation, as well as to undertake intensive construction of roads and bridges, which plays a primary role in the development of regions and promotes fortification of the state’s overall position in this field. Taking all these factors into account, one can confidently state that Azerbaijan will turn into a leading country from the point of view of transport infrastructure.
