Ilya Yefimovich Repin was one of the greatest Russian painters and masters of drawing. He produced a great number of paintings on the historical (“Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan”, “Zaporozhye Cossacks are Writing a Letter to the Sultan of Turkey”...) and contemporary themes (“Barge Haulers on the Volga”, ”Religious Procession in Kursk Province”, etc.). Repin is an acknowledged master of the portrait, subtle color nuances, and deep psychological penetration.
