Russian History - Policy of Paul I
Catherine’s nephew Paul I became her successor. He was known for his relatively peaceful foreign politics. Having won a number of outstanding victories in Italy, Russia abruptly changed its foreign politics priorities and found the alliance with France. It worried European countries, England in particular, which supported another palace coup. Emperor Paul I was killed in March 1801 and his elder son Alexander I became the next Russian monarch.
