How to travel to Georgia by boat?

Regular Georgia ferry services for passengers and vehicles operate to and from Russia and Ukraine. To start exploring Georgia with its harbor cities of Poti and Batumi is a great way to travel. The latter is also a touristic center of the country.

There are currently two points from where you can get to the country shores: from Russian Sochi by fast vessels “Kometa” or from Ukrainian Ilichevsk by ferry. Each of these routes have their own advantages, so let’s give a deeper look into them.

«Kometa» passenger ships schedule from Sochi (Russia):

Kometa ferries route only to Batumi and back. The ship has 114 seats, duration of the trip is approximately 5 hours, but it all depends on the weather conditions. Tickets are available at the cash desk No.3 of the sea station Sochi or in the cashbox of the Batumi seaport, and are also possible for advanced booking, with purchase time of one day before the trip. This option suits people traveling independently and light, since it is only 20 kilos allowed on board, extra kilos will be charged accordingly. To book Kometa tickets and for more information please call: Batumi +995 593 333 966; Sochi +7918 409 1296.

Ferry from Ukraine (Chernomorsk) to Georgia:

Ferry service connecting Georgian and Ukrainian ports also offers vehicle/baggage. In the Ukraine it departs from the city of Chernomorsk (formerly Illichivsk) located 20 km from Odessa. Ferries run from Chernomorsk to Batumi 3-4 times a week.

Ferry departure time is a constant subject to changes due to functioning capacity of seaports, weather conditions, duration of customs control procedures and other circumstances not depending on the carrier. Approximate length of the trip is 48 hours. Apart from the indefinite time of departure and sail, it is to note another significant disadvantage of this option – extreme busy schedule of ferries and their kind-of-ok service. However, this is the only way of Georgia ferry services offered. For more details on ferry services please contact: Georgia +995 422 274 119; Ukraine +380 482 348 296. Ferries schedule for the next two months is available here.

Ferry Burgas-Batumi-Burgas

A new ferry service started operating between Bulgaria and Georgia in the summer of 2022. You can get to Batumi from the Bulgarian city of Burgas on the comfortable and ample ferry that runs once a week between the two cities.

The Druzhba Ferry (meaning friendship in Russian) has been connecting Bulgaria and Georgia since 2014. In July 2022 the new ferry called Vilnius started operating.

It is considered the largest ship in the world engaged in passenger and cargo transportation. It is operated by the Ukrainian company Ukrferry. In total 108 passengers can be accommodated in the cabins. It is equipped with 4 and 2-bed cabins, as well as junior suites and suites. The ferry has two decks that can accommodate at least 50 universal containers and up to 50 heavy vehicles.

The passengers can use the lounge, bar, and children's playroom.

Ticket Booking

The company offers two types of bookings: "guaranteed" and "non-guaranteed". After a one-time payment from a debit or credit card is done and the amount is transferred to the company's account, the booking is considered guaranteed. If your bank takes a few days to complete the transaction or you pay for your booking by bank transfer, the booking is considered non-guaranteed. It is necessary that the amount is delivered to the company's account at least 72 hours before the departure. Otherwise, the booking will be canceled automatically. Therefore, you should organize the purchase of tickets in advance and be in touch with sales offices. To learn about the tariffs and booking terms, we recommend you check the official website: http://www.pbm.bg/tariff

In the summer of 2022, the ferry will run once a week. Travel time in one direction takes from 2 to 3 days.

Batumi ticket office is located at St. Makatsaria 9 (next to the local port).

It is to note that ships go into the sea only in good weather and the ferry schedule may change depending on the season.

Thus, it is up to you to decide which water services to use. No matter what you choose, wish you an enjoyable trip, nice weather and fair wind.
