Heart of Antalya: Ninety Metres Above the Gulf

Heart of Antalya (Ferris Wheel)

Aktur Park sits on Atatürk Bulvarı in Konyaaltı, a broad coastal district west of Antalya's old city. You can see the Heart of Antalya long before you reach it – a 90-metre wheel turning slowly above the rooftops, dwarfing everything beside it on the boulevard. After dark, the lighting rig cycles through colour after colour, and the drivers slow.

From the top of its arc, the Gulf of Antalya opens to the south, the Taurus Mountains run along the northern horizon, and Konyaaltı Beach stretches west along the shore. One full rotation takes 20 minutes – enough time to watch the light change.

History of the Heart of Antalya

Heart of Antalya (Ferris Wheel)

Aktur Park has occupied this stretch of Konyaaltı since 1997, growing from a small local fairground into a park with more than 40 attractions. By the mid-2010s, the city's tourism profile had shifted considerably – Antalya was receiving over 10 million international visitors a year. As a result, the park's management decided on something more visible. Something that would change the skyline.

The Heart of Antalya is one of the largest Ferris wheels in Europe, manufactured in China by JUMA – the world's largest Ferris wheel producer. The lighting system alone, capable of producing synchronised 3D displays across the entire structure, costs the equivalent of $450,000.

It opened on the first day of Eid al-Adha in August 2019. The timing was deliberate: a public holiday, the city full of visitors, the wheel turning for the first time above a crowd. It has not stopped since.

Highlights

The Heart of Antalya offers three things worth coming for: the panorama from the top, the ride itself, and after dark, the lighting display that changes the wheel into something else entirely.

The View

The cabin rises slowly – the park shrinks, then the rooftops of Konyaaltı, then the full width of the shore. At the top, the Taurus Mountains fill the northern horizon, the peaks running the length of the skyline. To the south, the Gulf opens without interruption. On a clear spring morning, the snow line is still visible on the highest ridges; the same afternoon, you are looking at the Mediterranean from 90 metres above sea level. The geometry of the city makes more sense from up here than it ever does on the ground – the old town to the east, the modern districts spreading west, the long pebble beach holding the whole thing against the water.

The Cabins

The Cabins, Heart of Antalya (Ferris Wheel)

The 42 standard cabins are fully enclosed and air-conditioned, each seating up to 8 people. The ride is smooth – the rotation so slow and steady that you are aware of height well before you are aware of movement. At this speed, the ascent feels unhurried in exactly the right way.

The Lighting Display

After dark, the wheel becomes a different landmark entirely. The lighting rig cycles through sequences of colour – slow, shifting, occasionally synchronised into patterns visible from across the Konyaaltı district. From street level, from the beach, or from the café directly beneath, the display fills the sky above the rooftops. At this hour, the wheel is less about the view and more about the spectacle. And the spectacle is considerable.

Best Time to Visit the Heart of Antalya

Heart of Antalya (Ferris Wheel)

The wheel runs year-round, and the experience changes considerably depending on when you go.

For the clearest views, come in daylight – cabin lighting after dark reflects off the windows, softening the outlook. Evening visits trade the panorama for the spectacle of the lighting display.

Spring (April–May) and Autumn (September–October) are the most rewarding seasons overall. The air is clear, the heat is manageable, and the Taurus peaks are most visible on the horizon from the top of the wheel.

Summer (June–August) is the busiest period. Temperatures reach 35–38°C (95–100°F) in the open, but the closed, air-conditioned cabins make the ride comfortable regardless.

Winter (November–March) sees lighter crowds and cooler air. The park is quieter, and the ride on a clear winter afternoon has an unhurried quality that summer cannot offer.

Opening Hours

The Heart of Antalya opens in the early afternoon and runs late into the evening in conjunction with Aktur Park. General hours are approximately 14:00–01:00 in summer and 15:00–23:00 in winter, but times shift by season and day of the week. Check the Aktur Park website or call ahead before visiting, particularly outside peak season.

The wheel does not operate in strong wind or heavy rain.

How to Get to the Heart of Antalya

On foot from Konyaaltı Beach: The wheel is visible from the beach strip, and a 10-minute walk inland along Atatürk Bulvarı brings you directly to the park entrance.

By tram: The T2 nostalgic tram runs to the Müze stop, near the Antalya Archaeological Museum site in Konyaaltı. From there, the wheel is a 10-minute walk west along the boulevard.

By taxi: From Kaleiçi, allow 10 to 15 minutes depending on traffic. Ask for Aktur Park or the Heart of Antalya – drivers know the wheel on sight.

Tips for an Optimal Visit

Recommended duration: The ride itself takes 20 minutes. Add time for the Aktur Park attractions if you have younger travellers with you, or for a drink at the café beneath the wheel before or after. 1–1.5 hours covers everything comfortably.

Photography: Afternoon rides give the clearest light for shooting. Frame wide – the cabin windows handle broad panoramas well but soften detail on distant subjects like the Taurus peaks.

Combine with: Konyaaltı Beach is a short walk south. The Antalya Aquarium, one of the largest tunnel aquariums in the world, is immediately adjacent to the park. The two make a natural afternoon together, particularly for families.

Crowds: Weekday afternoons outside July and August are the easiest times to visit. Summer weekends attract local families in the evenings – evening visits are particularly popular at this time of year – and queues for the wheel can build after 19:00.

Antalya has been watched from below for two thousand years – from the harbour, from the clifftops of Kaleiçi, from the walls the Romans built and the Byzantines repaired. The Heart of Antalya simply reverses the angle. The city now looks up at the wheel, and those inside it look down at everything else. The mountains have not moved. Neither has the Gulf. The view from ninety metres is only a new way of seeing what was always there.
