Karaalıoğlu Park Antalya – Sunset Views, History & Tips

Karaalioğlu Park, Antalya

Karaalioglu Park (Karaalioğlu Parkı) is where locals go to breathe and one of the best stops for visitors in Antalya, Türkiye. The park sits on a cliff above the Mediterranean. Consequently, it invites wide views over the sea and the Taurus Mountains. No entrance fee. No queue.

Among Antalya's public parks, it is the notable historical park, built during Turkey's early Republican era. The elements of the original design are still visible, although the park has undergone restoration and changes over time.

This coastal green space has plenty of benches where you can sit and watch the water. Cafés serving refreshments line the main promenades. In summer, the vibrant sights of the summer bustle give it energy. Come in early morning or around dusk, and it turns atmospheric, quieter, and worth lingering in. It is a romantic spot for couples. The cliff terraces at golden hour are a must-pause for a photo.

The park connects easily to what is around it. Some visitors continue from there down to sunbathe at Mermerli Beach, below the cliffs. Or they walk down into Kaleiçi, the old town. Antalya's nature parks, like Düden Waterfalls, reward a good day trip. But Karaalıoğlu is where most people find their peaceful moments before the day begins, or wind it down when it ends.

History of Karaalıoğlu Park

Karaalioğlu Park, Antalya

Karaalıoğlu Park's history dates back to Turkey's early Republican era in the 20th century. Construction began in the 1930s on land that had previously been a picnic ground and, briefly, a settlement for Roma (Gypsy) communities who arrived in 1927. Much of the park’s current layout was established in the early 1940s, under Governor Haşim İşcan. He commissioned architect Necmettin Ateş to design it. The Antalya Beautification Society helped fund the work.

The park took three years to build and gained wide fame when it opened. It was named İnönü Park after President İsmet İnönü, who visited in 1943. An illuminated sign at the western entrance carried that name; the eastern entrance read "Gazi Boulevard".

The design followed the geometric, symmetrical style typical of Republican-era parks across Turkey: straight walking axes, neat flowerbeds, fountains with shaped pools, electric lamp posts, pergolas, and open lawns.

In 2002, the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality held a national competition to update the park. The winning team – Hüseyin Kahvecioğlu and Nurbin Paker Kahvecioğlu – proposed restoring the park's historic character while adding new uses. Work on the western section followed in 2003–2004. The old Atatürk Stadium, which was once addressed on the eastern edge, was demolished in 2016 to expand the park further. (Engin, E. F., & Erdoğan, R. (2020). Karaalioglu Park attractions involve nature, views, and small cultural elements within a walkable space. It is one of the relaxing places in Antalya, where visitors can walk, sit, picnic, and enjoy the surroundings.

While Antalya has no shortage of things to do, tourists can spend two hours here without covering the same ground twice.

Tree Species and Botanical Interest

The park has the depth of a botanical garden in the heart of the city. Many of its trees date back to the original planting in the 1940s. Species include Araucaria, Red Pine, Stone Pine, Oriental Plane, Judas Tree, Date Palm, Magnolia, Taurus Cedar, Mediterranean Cypress, and Olive. Some trees stand out for their size and age. The variety of Mediterranean flora in Karaalıoğlu is truly impressive.

Birdlife

The park shelters a few dozen birds, making it a quieter nature park in Antalya. Travellers will also spot bright green parrots on the palm trees. They have lived wild in the park for years. Early morning is the best time to see the heightened activity.

Sculptures and Monuments

Karaalioglu Park features several sculptures that reveal Antalya cultural activities. Scattered across the park are several works. The Nâzım Hikmet monument, placed in 2010 on the 47th anniversary of the poet's death, neighbours the western section. Elsewhere, you will find a Don Quixote statue, seemed ready for a new adventure, the Worker and Son monument, a Hand sculpture, and a set of Frog sculptures along the eastern paths. They are not particularly well signposted, so keep an eye out as you walk.

Viewing Terraces

The scenic vistas in Antalya don't get better than this. Karaalioglu Park views are the main reason many visitors come here. The cliff-side terraces rise 30-40 metres above sea level. And they look directly out over the Gulf of Antalya, with the Beydağları range in the background. Sunset is the peak time, but there's enough space to find a slice of tranquillity. On clear days, you can see along the coast in both directions.

Cafés and Picnic Spots

There are several cafés inside the park, generally along the main promenades. Tea, coffee, snacks, and the outdoor seating are very pleasant. Grassy spots under the trees, ideal for picnics, are easy to find throughout the park, especially on the lawns further from the main paths.

Former Atatürk Stadium Area

The former Atatürk Stadium area within Karaalıoğlu Park has been redeveloped into an open public space. The stadium was removed to reconnect this part of the park with the surrounding landscape. Today, it forms part of the wider walking and recreational area.

Things to See Near Karaalioglu Park

Mermerli Beach, Karaalioğlu Park, Antalya

Karaalıoğlu Park's location places it close to several key Antalya landmarks. Visitors will be able to easily combine it with other stops in the historic district.

Atatürk House & Museum

Atatürk House & Museum (Atatürk Evi ve Müzesi) is a short walk from Karaalıoğlu Park, in its northwest corner. The museum focuses on Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s visits to Antalya and provides context for the early Republican period.

Mermerli Beach

Antalya boasts a few coastal spots, and Mermerli Beach (Mermerli Plajı) is the closest to Karaalıoğlu Park. It is a small beach beneath the old city walls with a platform that extends over the water. Entry requires a fee (run by a restaurant above), but it is considered the best beach in Antalya, adjacent to the city centre.

Kaleiçi – Antalya’s Old Town

Kaleiçi is located directly next to Karaalıoğlu Park. The park borders it to the east. Roman walls, Ottoman-era houses, narrow stone streets, and Hadrian's Gate are all within easy strolling distance.

Hıdırlık Tower

This 2nd-century Roman tower (Hıdırlık Kulesi) sits at the outskirts of Karaalıoğlu Park and is among the famous Antalya historical sights. It is a short walk from the park's lower terraces. You cannot go inside, but the exterior and the surrounding views are beautiful.

Old City Marina

The marina lies below the old town, reached by stairs from Kaleiçi. It is a working harbour with restaurants along the waterfront. Boat tours off the coastline depart from the harbour daily in summer. It is also a pleasant spot for an evening meal with views of the old city walls above.

Do You Need to Pay a Fee to Enter the Park?

Karaalıoğlu Park entrance fee is free. This is also true for most public parks in Antalya. The park welcomes locals and newcomers daily and does not have strict opening times.

Karaalıoğlu Park visit usually takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on how long travellers wish to stay at the viewpoints. It works best as part of a walking route through the city centre.

Best Time to Visit Karaalıoğlu Park for Sunset

The timing matters for the best sunset spots in Antalya, including Karaalıoğlu Park. The cliff-side terraces face west, which means the light hits the water directly in the late afternoon. In summer (June to August), sunset falls between 20:00 and 20:30. In spring and autumn, expect it from 19:00 to 19:30. Winter sunsets arrive early – around 17:30. Yet the terraces are calmer, and the colours can be just as striking.

Arrive 30 to 45 minutes before sunset. This gives you time to find a good spot on the viewing terraces before they get crowded. The main terrace above the sea gets busy on summer evenings, especially at weekends. If you want more space, walk south along the cliff. There are several smaller platforms with good views and far fewer people.

How to Get to Karaalıoğlu Park

Hıdırlık Tower, Kaleiçi Old Town, Antalya

Karaalıoğlu Park is located on the southern tip of the city centre, next to Kaleiçi. Visitors can arrive on foot, by tram, or by taxi.

The park is walkable from numerous accommodations in the Kaleiçi quarter. The northern entrance is a few minutes further along from the Hidırlik Tower.

The park can be reached by tram from central stops, or more easily on foot from Kaleiçi.

Taxi-hailing apps and licensed taxis both operate in Antalya. Tell the driver "Karaalıoğlu Parkı." A taxi from the airport takes 20–30 minutes.

Driving to the park is possible, but parking directly adjacent is limited. There is a paid parking lot near Hadrian’s Gate called Mekanik Katli Otopark. Avoid driving into Kaleiçi itself because the streets are narrow and access is restricted in some areas.

Both Google Maps and Apple Maps locate Karaalıoğlu Parkı accurately. The park entrance closest to Kaleiçi is across Hidırlik Tower. The western entrance, not far from the Atatürk House, is the main entrance.

Other Parks and Green Spaces in Antalya

Karaalıoğlu Park is the city's popular historic green space, but Antalya has other options to build into a trip.

The most frequented nature park in Antalya is Düden Park (Düden Şelalesi Parkı). The appeal is straightforward: waterfalls.

Those travelling with little ones cannot miss the Land of Legends. This large-scale theme park and resort, with numerous accolades, is on the coast between Antalya and Belek, about 35 km east of the city centre. It comprises a water park, rides, a shopping mall, hotels, and an aquarium in one complex.

A more active outdoor activity in Antalya Province awaits adventurers at the Köprülü Canyon National Park (Köprülü Kanyon Milli Parkı), 90 km northeast of Antalya. The canyon drops to depths of 400 metres in places. It is an exciting white-water rafting destination in Turkey, suitable for beginners and experienced rafters alike. The park also contains two remarkably well-preserved Roman bridges. Day tours from Antalya typically pair rafting with a visit to the nearby ancient city of Selge.

Antalya hides lots of curiosities beyond the beach. These are a clifftop Republican-era park, canyon rapids, and theme park rides. Surprisingly, the city's green spaces cover more ground than one would expect.
