Tibet is a land of mystery and altitude – remote, windswept, and nestled so high in the mountains that aircraft seldom pass overhead. It is a place where the spiritual force of the Himalayas merges with a unique form of Buddhism, offering travellers an encounter with one of the world’s most enigmatic cultures. Our 8-day Classic Tibet Explorer Tour is designed for those seeking extraordinary experiences in a setting like no other.
Your journey begins in Lhasa, the capital and spiritual heart of Tibet. Over the course of three days, you will visit its most iconic sites: ascend the monumental Potala Palace, explore the sacred Jokhang Temple and Norbulingka Palace, and walk the grounds of the Sera and Drepung monasteries. On the fourth day, the tour moves beyond Lhasa toward the wider landscapes of Tibet. You will travel to Shigatse via Yamdrok Lake and the Karola Glacier, stopping in Gyantse to visit the remarkable Pelkor Chode Monastery.
On the fifth day, explore Tashi Lhunpo Monastery and the bustling market of Shigatse before crossing the high Gyatso La Pass (5,232 metres) en route to Tingri. Day six will be the pinnacle of your adventure – a scenic drive to Rongbuk Monastery, the world’s highest, where you’ll witness the awe-inspiring view of Mount Everest. The final two days will be spent returning to Lhasa, giving you time to reflect on the journey through this exceptional land.
The 8-day Classic Tibet Explorer Tour is an unforgettable high-altitude expedition, taking you from 3,600 to over 5,200 metres above sea level, through sacred sites and majestic mountain landscapes. Explore the detailed itinerary and prepare for a journey into the spiritual and natural wonders of Tibet.

Tour itinerary:

Day 1: Lhasa – arrival

Arrive in Lhasa, the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region. Often referred to as the “Roof of the World”, Tibet is the highest region on Earth, with an average altitude of around 4,900 metres above sea level, while its capital, Lhasa, lies at approximately 3,500 metres. After landing at Gonggar Airport, your local guide will meet you and assist with the transfer to your hotel.
No meals
Day 2: Lhasa

Visiting one of the most charismatic structures ever built in Tibet, the Potala Palace, the former winter residence of successive Dalai Lamas, is an awe-inspiring experience. After lunch, you will visit Jokhang Temple, located in the heart of the old town and originally built in the mid-7th century AD. After visiting the temple, a walk around Barkhor Street allows you more time to observe local life and absorb the atmosphere of Lhasa’s historic centre.
Meals: breakfast, dinner
Day 3: Lhasa

Visit Norbulingka, the summer palace of the Dalai Lamas. Construction began in the 1740s, and after more than 200 years of expansion it now covers an area of 0.36 million square metres. It is the largest man-made garden in Tibet, noted for its landscaped grounds and rich collection of historical relics. After that, we visit Sera Monastery, which is well known for its Buddhist scripture debates. “Sera” means “wild rose” in Tibetan. The monastery was founded in 1419 by a prominent disciple of Tsongkhapa and covers an area of 0.11 million square metres.
In the afternoon, we visit one of the three great monasteries of the Gelug sect – Drepung Monastery. At its height, more than 10,000 monks lived here. The monastery covers an area of 0.2 million square metres and stands at an altitude of 3,800 metres.
Meals: breakfast, dinner
Day 4: Lhasa – Gyangtse – Shigatse

Leaving Lhasa, we head out for three days of exploration deep in the Tibetan highlands. Today’s destination is Gyangtse (265 km, 4 hours), Tibet’s fourth-largest city, located at the crossroads of historic trade routes linking China, India, and Sikkim. En route, we stop to enjoy views of Yamdrok Lake, home to a variety of waterfowl. We also pass the Karola Glacier (5,050 m), visible from the roadside on the way to Gyangtse.
Upon arrival in Gyangtse (4,040 m), we visit Pelkor Monastery, built in the early 15th century and located to the north-east of the town at an altitude of 3,900 m. The monastery is renowned for its wall paintings and Buddha statues. We then leave Gyangtse for the 90 km drive to Shigatse (3,836 m). Overnight in Shigatse.
Meals: breakfast, dinner
Day 5: Shigatse – Tingri

In the morning after breakfast, we visit Tashi Lhunpo Monastery. As the seat of the Panchen Lama, one of Tibet’s most important spiritual leaders, Tashi Lhunpo Monastery was originally founded in 1447 by the First Dalai Lama in honour of his teacher. The monastery resembles a city within a city, with a towering 26-metre-high statue of Maitreya Buddha at its centre.
We then visit the local market before leaving Shigatse for Tingri (240 km, 4 hours), with a stop in the small town of Lhatse en route. The journey continues across the Gyatso La Pass (5,232 m) before arriving in Tingri (4,300 m), a small Tibetan settlement overlooking a vast plain framed by the Himalayan peaks of Mount Everest (8,848 m) and Cho Oyu (8,153 m). Overnight in Tingri.
Meals: breakfast, dinner
Day 6: Tingri – Mount Everest View – Rongbuk Monastery – Shigatse

Today offers one of the major highlights of the entire journey (100 km, 2 hours), as we have the chance to see Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world, weather permitting. We first drive to Gyawula Mountain Pass, rising to 5,210 metres above sea level, where we enjoy our first view of Everest, locally known as Qomolangma, meaning “Mother Mountain”. Continuing the drive, we visit Rongbuk Monastery, the highest monastery in the world and belonging to one of the oldest sects of Tibetan Buddhism. Located at an altitude of 5,100 metres, the monastery lies at the foot of the Rongbuk Glacier and is home to around 30 monks. In the afternoon, we drive back to Shigatse (340 km, 5 hours) for a second overnight stay.
Meals: breakfast, lunch
Day 7: Shigatse – Lhasa

We drive back to Lhasa from Shigatse along the same route (270 km, 4 hours). Along the way, there will be opportunities to stop briefly for rest or photography whenever something of interest catches your eye. The journey offers a final chance to enjoy the striking landscapes of the Tibetan plateau.
Meals: breakfast, dinner
Day 8: Lhasa – departure

This is the final day of your stay in Tibet. After breakfast, enjoy some free time until our driver and tour guide escort you to the airport or railway station for departure.
