Almaty - the Commonwealth cultural capital for 2014Almaty has received the status of the Commonwealth cultural capital for 2014, - reports IA News-Kazakhstan, citing the Akimat Press Service. A corresponding certificate was presented to Almaty Akim Akhmetzhan Yesimov by Mikhail Shvydkoi, Co-Chairman of the Board of the Interstate Fund for Humanitarian Cooperation (IFESCCO).

In 2014, Almaty, as the cultural capital, plans to conduct a series of cultural events: International Literary Festival, a summer open-air festival “Art-Playground”, “Parade of Orchestras”, contemporary art festival “ArtBatFest”, international puppet carnival, many theater productions, etc.

The relay baton of “Commonwealth Cultural Capital” has been successfully passed from city to city for several years as part of the program initiated by the IFESCCO of the CIS members-countries, expanding and strengthening the relations between countries and peoples in the sphere of culture. Earlier, the Commonwealth cultural capitals were Gabala (Azerbaijan) Gyumri (Armenia) and Mogilev (Belarus). In 2014 along with Almaty this status was also given to Osh (Kyrgyzstan).
