Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Moon Lake, Dunhuang

Crescent Moon Lake in Dunhuang

A Jewel in the Desert

Tucked among the golden dunes of the Gobi Desert, where the wind reshapes the sandy dunes day after day, lies the Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Moon Lake scenic area (鸣沙山月牙泉, Míngshā Shān Yuèyá Quán) – a place that seems to defy the harsh nature of the surrounding desert. It feels almost as though it has defied the harsh nature of the surrounding desert. Steep sandy ridges form a ring around a small crescent-shaped lake, whose clear waters have sustained this life-giving ecosystem for thousands of years despite the barren landscape around it. During the height of the Silk Road, this peaceful corner served as an important stop for travellers passing through Dunhuang.

Mingsha Mountain, also known as the Singing Sand Dunes, takes its name from a striking natural phenomenon: as the sand shifts, it produces a low hum or melodious rustling sound reminiscent of distant singing. Rising to around 250 metres (820 feet), the dunes tower above traditional wooden structures with intricate pavilions set among stands of reeds.

Today, visitors come here for more than just the scenery. Here, the desert becomes a playground for adventure, offering the chance to climb above the endless sands and experience the power of this harsh natural environment. Use this guide to plan your route, pick the best time to go and make the most of this hidden oasis tucked away among the sands.

Recommended Routes

Choose the route that best matches your pace and interests – whether it’s a leisurely walk through the oasis or a more adventurous trek among the dunes.

Route 1 – Scenic Walk

Duration: about 3 hours on foot or 2.5 to 3.5 hours by sightseeing vehicle.
Difficulty: moderate.

Most of the route is easy walking, but the final climb up Mingsha Mountain involves walking on loose sand and takes noticeably more effort.

Visitor Center (游客中心) → East Side of Mingyue Square (鸣月广场东) → Ceramic Road (陶瓷公路) → Yaowang Temple Site (药王庙遗址) → Xiaoxiangwan Square (小泉湾广场) → Mingyue Pavilion (鸣月阁) → Crescent Moon Lake (月牙泉) → Mingsha Mountain climb (登山)

Route 2 – Desert Adventure

Duration: about 4 hours.
Difficulty: easy to moderate, depending on your chosen mode of transport.

The route involves less strenuous walking than Route 1, although camel riding and desert activities can be physically demanding. The first section can be covered by a camel, a desert motorcycle or a desert off-road vehicle. After reaching Xiaoxiangwan Square, continue on foot to Mingyue Pavilion and Crescent Moon Lake.

Visitor Center (游客中心) → Mingyue Square (鸣月广场) → Camel Riding Area (驼场) → East Mountain (东山) → Xiaoxiangwan Square (小泉湾广场) → Mingyue Pavilion (鸣月阁) → Crescent Moon Lake (月牙泉)

Both routes can be adapted depending on how much time you have and the mode of transport you prefer, with optional paid activities available along the way.

Activities

Bring your desert adventure to life and choose the experience that suits you best: cross the sandy expanse at a relaxed pace, feel the thrill of a high-speed dune descent, or take to the air to see Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Moon Lake from a whole new perspective.

Embark on a camel ride to follow the caravan along the slopes, enjoying the calm rhythm of the journey. For a more active way to experience the dunes, try sandboarding – a thrilling descent down the dunes on a custom board.

If you’re after a high-octane adventure, choose a desert motorcycle or a desert off-road vehicle to explore Mingsha Mountain at a faster pace. This lets you cover more ground and take in the massive dunes from entirely different angles.

Another unforgettable way to explore the desert is to take to the skies in a motorised glider or helicopter. From above, you can admire the intricate patterns of the landscape, while Crescent Moon Lake appears like a tiny blue or green gem tucked into the vast desert.

For a truly immersive experience, stay overnight at a desert campsite. Spend the evening under a blanket of stars and welcome the first rays of sunlight in the heart of the dunes the following morning, when the scenic area is at its quietest and most serene.

Festivals and Events

Stay at Mingsha Mountain after dark to join the famed Dunhuang Starry Sky Concert (万人星空演唱会) – a large-scale, open-air musical event held right among the dunes. Settle on the sandy slopes, enjoy the music, and watch as thousands of spectators light up the desert with glow sticks and phone flashlights, turning the landscape into a shimmering sea of stars.

Stunning drone formations and vibrant light projections paint the night sky and the surrounding dunes, transforming an ordinary evening into an unforgettable shared experience. The concert runs every summer during the peak tourist season, usually kicking off in mid-June and running through October.

Travel Tips & Security Guidelines

Gobi Desert

Dress for the desert: even when temperatures feel comfortable, the desert can warm up quickly in direct sunlight. Wear lightweight, long-sleeved clothing, a hat, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen to protect your skin and eyes from both the sun and sand.

Choose comfortable, closed-toe shoes with a secure fit, as sand can easily get inside, especially when climbing the dunes. To keep the fine sand out of your shoes, it is highly recommended to rent bright orange sand-proof shoe covers, which are available at the entrance for CNY/RMB 15 ($2.20 / €1.90 / £1.65), or you can buy them onsite.

Save Energy with Sightseeing Shuttles: if you don’t plan to walk the entire route, use the scenic area’s shuttle vehicles to travel between more distant parts of the site. This is especially convenient in hot weather and helps you conserve energy for exploring the dunes and visiting the main attractions.

Beat the Heat: during the hot season, take advantage of rest areas, shelters and sections equipped with cooling and misting systems. The visitor centre and other indoor facilities are maintained at a comfortable 22°C (72°F), which makes them ideal for cooling down, avoiding overheating and recharging.

Pack Snacks and Water: dining options within the scenic area are limited to a few cafés, and prices can be relatively high, so it is worth bringing your own snacks and energy bars. A thermos is useful all year round, keeping drinks cooler for longer in summer and warmer in winter.

Stay Hydrated: drink water regularly in small amounts rather than waiting until you feel thirsty. In hot weather, especially during long walks and dune climbs, consider drinks with electrolytes to help replace salts lost through sweating.

Protect Your Equipment from Sand: in windy conditions, sand can quickly become airborne, so keep your phone and camera in a protective case. Avoid leaving electronic devices exposed on the sandy slopes, and try not to change camera lenses outdoors.

Stick to Designated Routes and Protect the Environment: don’t take shortcuts through planted areas, trample vegetation or enter restricted zones. The fragile plant life helps stabilise the sand and supports the oasis ecosystem.

Take Care When Climbing the Dunes: walking on loose sand takes considerably more effort than walking on firm ground, so keep a comfortable pace and take regular breaks. Avoid climbing during extreme heat and allow enough time for the return journey.

Camel Riding Safety: if you plan to ride a camel, stay calm and follow your guide’s instructions. Only mount the animal once it has come to a complete stop, avoid sudden movements and don’t approach the camels on your own.
