Mamkoda Monastery in Mtskheta-Mtianeti

Very close to the northern outskirts of Tbilisi, you can find a quiet and picturesque place that is great for contemplating landscapes and relaxing from the hustle and bustle of the city. The same thing was decided about a few centuries ago by Christian monks who founded a monastery on this place for the first time. We are talking about the Mamkoda monastery, located near the village of the same name.

The monastery complex includes two churches: St. George and the Mother of God. They were built in the XIX century, but the monastery was originally founded in these places sixteen centuries earlier. Nowadays, ruins of former buildings can still be found on the territory of the monastery.

It is known that before the arrival of Soviet power, a hospital worked at the monastery. However, in 1921-1924, all the monastic sisters had to move to Mtskheta, and the complex itself was seriously damaged by looting. Since then, the monastery was abandoned until 2006. Now the Mamkoda monastery has been completely reconstructed, cells for monks have been built on the territory and neat paved paths have been equipped.

Tourists come to Mamkoda to find peace and solitude. There is a truly peaceful atmosphere here. The well-groomed space of the monastery is conducive to leisurely walks. The indisputable advantage of this place is the landscapes that open from the walls of the monastery. Take the chance to enjoy the peace and excellent views just a couple of kilometers from the outskirts of Tbilisi and residential areas.
