ShashmakomFebruary 9, Fine Art Gallery of Uzbekistan hosted musical project "Shashmakom", which was dedicated to a birthday of a great Uzbek poet Alisher Navoi. Shashmakom is a six maqoms (folk songs), which are lined up in a single cycle. Each of them has its modal, rhythmic and emotional features. In each of the six exhibition halls of the gallery, consistently were presented scenes of medieval classical music - Buzruk, Rost, Navo, Dugokh, Segokh and Irok.

After the presentation of the project, all visitors of the gallery were divided into 6 groups, and began alternately listening to maqoms, gradually moving from hall to hall. At the beginning, the organizers of the project were concerned about the acoustics of the halls, which were originally designed only for displaying of paintings, however, music and voices of the singers permeates the whole space around, including hearts of the listeners. Vocals parts were accompanied by sounds of such musical instruments as nay, dutar, tanbur and chang.

It should be noted, that Uzbek folk music is not inferior to modern one by its popularity on the contemporary estrade. It can be heard at different festivals, celebrations and weddings. In addition, in 2003 Shashmakom was included into UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
