Pitsunda, Georgia


Pitsunda Resort is a kingdom of the sea and pines. Majestic pines (with over 30 thousand) are the resort symbol. The name “Pitsunda” means “pine' in ancient Greek. It also says that when the city was founded by ancient Greeks there were already thick pine woods in place. The evergreen pine is considered a longevity symbol. Indeed, Pitsunda resort offers its visitors excellent health opportunity. The air saturated with the aroma of pine tar and needles is curative, and the sea waters time temper the body giving it strength.

Pitsunda is the world famous resort with astatus of urban settlement. It is located 22 km from Gagra and is rated among the four of the most popular resorts of Abkhazia after Gagra, New Athos and Gudauta.

Pitsunda is located on the sandy cape formed by the deposits of the river Bzyb flowing nearby. Wide sandy beaches of Pitsunda are washed by transparent and quiet sea – the purest of all the Black Sea coasts of the Caucasus.

Pitsunda is also famous for pure environment and beautiful microclimate. There is the abundance of sunlight and warmth. The climate there is humid subtropical. Average temperature in the summer is +26 С.

…The history of Pitsunda throws back to ancient times. Many centuries ago there was Pitiunt, a major fortress city of the antiquity. The historians first mentioned it in the 2nd millennium BC. In the 1 st century AD Pitiunt was taken by Romans who owned it until 256. In the 4 th century during the period of Byzantium domination Pitsunda became the center of Christianity since it was the place of exile for the first Christians. In the 10 th – 13 th centuries Pitsunda was the major religious center of the united Georgian kingdom. A magnificent temple in Pitsunda has survived from those times. Pitsunda was destroyed twice: during the Persian-Byzantine war in the 6 th century and in the period of Turkish conquest in the 16 th -18 th centuries. In the 19 th century the territory of Pitsunda was a part of the Russian Empire and in the next century, the USSR . It was back then when Pitsunda started to develop as a resort area due to a lot of resort-related- structure construction works. Very soon Pitsunda earned its fame of aclimatic health resort.

From the most ancient civilizations which existed on the territory of Pitsunda many historical monuments have survived; the ruins of ancient settlement Pitiunt, cathedral of the 10th century, the Museum of the resort history and Pitsunda lighthouse.

The perimeter of the resort is occupied by the network of the holiday hotels united by the single name “Pitsunda Resort”. Each one has a fine beach and a swimming-pool with sea water.
