Kurban Bayram, better known as Eid al-Adha, is a historic Islamic holiday which has been celebrated in Turkmenistan since 1994. On Kurban Bayram in Turkmenistan, every home is filled with tempting aromas as delicious festive dishes, sweets and baked goods are prepared and shared with relatives, neighbors and friends. As Eid al-Adha is a commemoration of the sacrifice of Abraham, a central focus of the holiday is on sacrifice. Some families will slaughter a sheep and share the meat with friends, neighbors and those in need. Each year, thousands of Muslims pilgrimage to local Islamic holy shrines over Kurban Bayram in Turkmenistan. The government also sends hundreds of people annually on the sacred Hajj to Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
