The Tanbaly Petroglyphs Tour is one of the most interesting day tours from Almaty. About 170 km from the city, in the Chu-Ili Mountains, Tanbaly is home to several thousand petroglyphs and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004.
Among the most remarkable are the earliest petroglyphs, dating to the 14th–13th centuries BC. They include large images of people and animals, as well as hunting and ritual scenes. At the heart of the ancient sanctuary is the so-called Bronze Age Pantheon, a composition of six large figures representing an assembly of deities and their worshippers. According to the Tanbaly Museum-Reserve, this composition has no known parallels anywhere else in the world.
During this day tour from Almaty, you will explore the archaeological complex with a guide and see its main groups of petroglyphs. The tour also includes a picnic in the surrounding countryside.
