Kunya-Urgench is a city that had been for a few centuries on the crossroad of the trading routes connecting China and Europe. It reached its peak in the 10-13th centuries when it was the capital city of the great and flourishing State of Khorezmshakhs. Life was in a full swing: bazaars full of overseas goods, mosques and medreses, attracting scientists from the entire Muslim world. Later it did not have luck anymore: it experienced destructive Mongol invasion by Genghis Khan, conquest of Tamerlane and in the 16th century it had turned into a desert due to change of the course of Amu Darya River. Despite this, unique monuments of the medieval Islam architecture had been preserved in the city.
