7-day Khabarovsk and Vladivostok Tour

Visit the two largest cities in Russia’s remote Far East region - Khabarovsk, on the Russian-Chinese border, and the legendary Vladivostok, terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railway. With a mix of nature, military and political history, indigenous culture, and gastronomy, this Vibrant Cities of the Russian Far East Tour showcases many diverse highlights of this unique part of Russia. From your base in Khabarovsk, venture into the surrounding area to visit an indigenous Nanai village, see Neolithic petroglyphs, and take a guided walk through the Bolshekhekhtsirsky Nature Reserve. Moving to Vladivostok, discover the city’s rich military history, beautiful coastal landscapes, and delicious seafood. Highlights include visiting famous forts; seeing lighthouses, bridges, and more on an evening boat tour; and visiting a sea cucumber farm to learn how this delicacy is harvested.

Tour itinerary:

Day 1: Khabarovsk - Arrival
 
Upon arrival in Khabarovsk, meet your driver and transfer to the hotel. After a short rest, take a sightseeing tour of the city to visit iconic places and hear interesting stories about Khabarovsk. This city, located on the Russian-Chinese border, is the largest in the Russian Far East and boasts a unique atmosphere and a fascinating history. Walk around Lenin Square and Glory Square and see the Transfiguration Cathedral. Stroll along the river embankment and enjoy the views from the Amur Cliff, the place where the city began. Continue to the picturesque city ponds, the Amur Bridge, and the Khabarovsk Regional Museum named after Grodekov. This museum was created in 1894 on the initiative of the Russian Geographical Society and provides an interesting overview of the archaeology, nature, indigenous peoples, and military and political history of the Khabarovsk territory. Return to the hotel. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 2: Khabarovsk
 
After breakfast, drive to the village of Sikachi-Alyan (75 km, 1.5 hours). This unique place, home to the indigenous Nanai people, offers visitors the chance to see petroglyphs from the Neolithic era, as well as experience the fascinating Nanai culture. After viewing the upper petroglyphs, visit the Nanai community, where you’ll be greeted in traditional style, with songs. Learn about the culture and lifestyle of the indigenous people of the Amur region as you meet members of the community and enter their homes. Take a master class on cutting fish and cooking tala (a traditional dish of Russia’s Far East, made of raw fish). Try the traditional cuisine, including fish and fish soup cooked on the fire and potato tala with dried chum salmon. The village experience will end with the opportunity to play Nanai games and have your photo taken in traditional costumes. Return to Khabarovsk. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 3: Khabarovsk – Bolshekhekhtsirsky Nature Reserve – Vladivostok
 
Breakfast followed by a trip to the Bolshekhekhtsirsky Nature Reserve (40 km, 1 hour). The 45,400-hectare reserve consists of typical mid-mountain landscapes of the Bolshoi Khekhtsir Ridge and boasts several species of wild animals including red deer, musk deer, wild boar, sable, Siberian weasel, harza, raccoon dog, and lynx. There are also such rare species as the Himalayan bear and the Amur tiger. While it’s rare for visitors to see such animals, your walk along the reserve’s ecological trail (from 31 May*) will showcase beautiful landscapes and typical Far Eastern flora. Highlights include tree species characteristic of the Manchu taiga and endemic medicinal plants such as aralia, lemongrass, and Siberian ginseng. You’ll also visit the Museum of Nature to learn about the Nature Reserve and the Far Eastern flora and fauna. Return to Khabarovsk. Free time. Transfer to the railway station to take the overnight train to Vladivostok (18:30-09:10).

*The ecological trail is open only from 31 May. If you visit earlier in the month, you will not be able to walk this trail but will still have the chance to learn about the reserve and some of its flora and fauna.

Day 4: Vladivostok
 
Upon arrival in Vladivostok, meet your driver and transfer to a local café for breakfast. Afterwards, take a sightseeing tour of this legendary far eastern Russian city. Historical attractions include the central square, the railway station, Admiralsky Square, and the arch of Tsarevich Nicholas. The tour also includes many sights that reflect Vladivostok’s coastal location and maritime history, including the Korabelnaya Embankment, sea passenger terminal, Golden Bridge, Russian Bridge, Ussuri Bay, and the lighthouse that has for almost 150 years shown the way to ships entering the port of Vladivostok through the Eastern Bosphorus. You’ll also visit the Submarine S-56 Museum and have the chance to take photos from a viewing platform. After the tour, check in to the hotel. Free time. In the evening, take a boat tour to see the city from a different perspective. Explore the coves and hills of the Golden Horn Bay from sea level and enjoy the evening views of the commercial and fishing ports, various lighthouses, and impressive bridges. The tour starts from the Korabelnaya Embankment and travels under the Golden and Russian bridges, across the Eastern Bosphorus, and along Russky Island and Elena Island. Return to the hotel. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 5: Vladivostok
 
Breakfast followed by an excursion to the picturesque bays of Vladivostok to enjoy the coastal scenery, learn about seafood production, and try local seafood delicacies. Starting from Golden Horn Bay, drive to Novik Bay, where you can taste seasonal seafood such as scallops, mussels, and oysters (additional cost depending on your choice of seafood). Continue to Russky Island, which is surrounded by numerous bays with beautiful views and breath-taking natural features. Your destination is a trepang (sea cucumber) farm in Voyevoda Bay (1.5 hours by road, one-way). Take a guided tour of the farm and learn how sea cucumbers are cultivated, before tasting sea cucumbers and other local seafood. Return to the hotel. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 6: Vladivostok
 
Breakfast. Today you’ll discover Vladivostok’s military history as the main stronghold of Russia in the Pacific Ocean. At the beginning of the 20th century, the city had extensive fortifications. Visit Fort No. 7, which was built in 1910 on Mount Toropov and named after the heir to the throne, Tsarevich Alexei. Learn about the history of the Russian-Japanese war and the construction of batteries and forts after the Japanese conquered Port Arthur. Enjoy the view of the city from Mount Toropov, walk through the impressive tunnels, and see the huge underground barracks that could accommodate up to 400 soldiers Continue to the Vladivostok Fortress Military-Historical Fortification Museum, where you’ll learn about the histories of fortification and artillery, the city of Vladivostok, and the Primorsky Territory. Then drive to Russky Island to visit the Novosiltsevskaya Battery, which is part of the complex of fortifications of the Vladivostok Fortress. The battery offers excellent views of the sea, Russky Island, and the Russky Island Bridge. Return to the hotel. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 7: Vladivostok – Departure
 
Breakfast followed by hotel check-out. At 09:00, transfer to the airport. Departure. End of the tour.
