This three-day journey offers an in-depth introduction to Henan Province — a region central to the formation of Chinese civilisation and home to some of the country’s most important Buddhist monuments. From ancient cave sanctuaries to historic monasteries, the sites visited on this tour preserve artistic and spiritual traditions that date back more than 1,500 years. Pagodas, sculptures, and carved reliefs across Henan reflect layers of history shaped by faith, power, and cultural exchange.
The tour begins in Luoyang with a visit to the Longmen Grottoes, among the most impressive cave complexes in China, renowned for their monumental Buddhist carvings. On the second day, the focus turns to two landmarks of exceptional significance: White Horse Temple, recognised as the first Buddhist monastery in China, and Shaolin Temple, famous worldwide for its association with Chan Buddhism and martial arts. Here, visitors can witness authentic kung fu demonstrations rooted in centuries-old tradition. The final day is dedicated to the Henan Museum, regarded as one of China’s leading museums, where extensive collections provide a broader historical context for the region.
The Kungfu Exploring Tour brings together religious heritage, monumental art, and living traditions, offering a concise yet meaningful perspective on China’s ancient past. Over three carefully planned days, the programme traces the foundations of Chinese culture through places that continue to shape its historical and spiritual identity.
Tour itinerary:
Arrive in Luoyang, one of China’s ancient capital cities, which served as the seat of power for 13 dynasties and is regarded as a sacred city for its rich historical and cultural heritage. Our car will pick you up and drive to visit the Longmen Grottoes, one of the four major grotto sites in China. The Longmen Grottoes were first carved in the 5th century and completed over a period of more than 400 years. They contain the largest number of statues among the four grottoes and include outstanding examples of ancient Chinese calligraphic art. A shuttle bus will be arranged during the visit. Overnight in Luoyang.
Duration of sightseeing tour: 4–5 hours
Today you will be driven to visit White Horse Temple (30 km, 1 hour). It was first built in 68 AD and has a history of more than 1,900 years. It is recognised as the first Buddhist temple officially established by the government after Buddhism was introduced to China and is often regarded as the birthplace of Chinese Buddhism. Then we continue to Shaolin Temple (55 km, 1 hour). Known from numerous kung fu films, Shaolin Temple was founded in the 5th century and is a Chan Buddhist temple long associated with Chinese martial arts, particularly Shaolin Kung Fu. A shuttle bus will be arranged during the visit. You will have a chance to watch a Shaolin Kung Fu performance at Shaolin Temple if time permits. Transfer to Zhengzhou (90 km, 2 hours). Overnight in Zhengzhou.
Duration of sightseeing tour: 5–6 hours
After breakfast, we will visit the Henan Museum. It is a history and art museum with a collection of more than 130,000 cultural relics from different historical periods, including over 5,000 items classified as first- and second-grade national treasures. Then you will be transferred to the airport or train station for your onward journey. End of the Kungfu Exploring Tour.
