Discover the Art of Carpet Weaving at the Badghisi Family Workshop

Embarking on a journey to Samarkand, the heart of the Great Silk Road, promises an enriching experience for travelers seeking a deeper understanding of the region's art, culture, and history. This ancient Uzbek city has attracted countless artisans, scholars, and craftsmen over the centuries, making it an ideal destination for those interested in witnessing the creation of unique and exquisite pieces. Among the various workshops and ateliers that dot Samarkand, the Badghisi family's carpet workshop, Samarkand Bukhara Silk Carpets, stands out as a must-visit destination for travelers seeking a truly immersive experience.

The Badghisi Family's Inspiring Journey

Haji Mohammad Ewaz Badghisi, a Turkmen master weaver, leads the family-run workshop that has dedicated over three centuries to the art of carpet weaving. He is now 103 years old. Despite facing numerous challenges, including relocating to Afghanistan during the Soviet annexation of Central Asia and later returning to Uzbekistan amid political unrest in 1992, the Badghisi family has persevered in their quest to preserve and pass on their ancestral art form. Today, Haji Baba's children, younger son Abdullah and daughter Zainab, carry on the family's legacy, managing the workshop with passion, knowledge, and a unique sense of humor.

A Glimpse into the World of Carpet Weaving

Visitors to the Badghisi workshop are treated to an enlightening tour of the entire carpet creation process, from the cultivation of silk and the use of natural vegetable dyes to the delicate art of weaving. The workshop emphasizes the importance of using traditional techniques and materials, such as madder plants, walnut shells, onion skins, and pomegranate skins for dyeing.

As you ascend to the weaving area, you'll find yourself in a large room filled with looms and a warm, inviting atmosphere that makes it feel like a gathering of close friends. The predominantly female weavers carry on the traditions of their ancestors, skillfully creating intricate carpets that hold symbolic and practical significance in their nomadic and urban lives.
