Continue nearby village of Borodino to explore the battle sites and visit the unique Museum-Reserve that commemorates the famous 1812 Battle of Borodino, the deadliest battle of the Napoleonic Wars.
Tour itinerary:
Day 1: Moscow – Mozhaysk – Borodino – Moscow
08:45 Meet your driver and tour leader at the hotel.
09:00 Transfer to Mozhaysk (110 km, 2 hours).
11:00 Meet your local guide for a short sightseeing tour of Mozhaysk. Admire the town’s beautiful religious buildings which include the St. Nicholas Cathedral, the Peter and Paul Church, and the Church of Jokim and Anna.
12:00 Explore the ancient Mozhaysk Kremlin, which is situated on Cathedral Hill next to the Mozhaika River. The Kremlin is a partially preserved white stone fortress that once served an important western outpost of the Russian State. Today, it is the town’s cultural and historical centre. It is still possible to see the remains of the earthen defensive ramparts with fragments of white stone towers and walls from different times, as well as entire fortress gates.
13:00 Visit the Luzhetsky Monastery founded in 1408 by St. Ferapont Belozersky, a disciple of Sergius of Radonezh. Admire the architecture and learn about the historically significant events that have occurred in the area since the monastery was built.
14:00 Lunch in the town centre.
15:00 Transfer to the Borodino Field (14 km, 15 mins).
15:30 Discover the Borodino Field Museum-Reserve (closed on Mondays and the last Wednesday of each month). This fascinating museum is located on the site of the deadliest battle of the Napoleonic Wars (the same site was also a place of conflict in the Great Patriotic War). Visit the “Glory Forever Borodino” exhibition and see various monuments and memorials.
18:00 Transfer to Moscow (130 km, 2-3 hours).
21:00 Arrive at the hotel. End of Historical Tour of Mozhaysk and Borodino from Moscow.
