Tour Description
Moscow – Pavlovsky Posad – Likino-Dulyovo – Moscow
Discover two examples of Russia’s rich folk craft traditions as you visit the provincial towns of Pavlovsky Posad and Likino-Dulyovo. Pavloposad headscarves and Dulevo porcelain each have long histories and are still made today using techniques and traditions passed down through generations of craftsmen and craftswomen. The headscarf has always been a significant part of a Russian women’s clothing, with particular importance attached to its quality and brightness. Pavlovsky Posad became Russia’s centre of printed headscarves, using intricate stamps to transfer complex, beautiful patterns onto the fabric. The modern industry of headscarf manufacture began as a small enterprise founded in 1795 by a peasant from the village of Pavlovo. This enterprise became a supplier to members of the imperial court and had the right to depict the state emblem on its signs and labels. Another village, Dulyovo, became the heart of porcelain manufacture and culture in Russia. The Dulevo factory formed the core of the porcelain empire of the Kuznetsov dynasty of industrialists. They were the first to make products for all segments of the population using expensive “aristocratic” materials like porcelain and including folk stories and images in their designs.
