The 3-day Kazbegi Hiking Tour is one of the most scenic tours in Georgia, bringing together some of the best-known mountain destinations around Kazbegi. You will explore Truso Valley with its mineral springs, travertine formations and old stone towers, and see the famous Gergeti Trinity Church against the backdrop of majestic Mount Kazbek. The route also takes you through Juta, a small high-altitude village known for its beautiful views of the surrounding mountains.
The tour includes three hikes, two of which are rated as moderate. The most demanding route leads to Gergeti Glacier and is intended for fitter, more experienced travellers. It covers around 20 km there and back and reaches an altitude of up to 3,300 metres. Those who prefer an easier hike can take the shorter route to Café 360° at around 2,930 metres, with beautiful panoramic views. This option is roughly half the full distance and allows the tour to remain at an overall moderate level.
Tour itinerary:
We will continue along the Georgian Military Highway, passing through the Cross Pass, the highest point of the highway at 2,394 m above sea level, before descending to the village of Kobi.
We will then take an off-road drive to the village of Kvemo Okrokana in Truso Valley, where we will begin our first hike. Following a dirt track, we will walk approximately 5 km to reach the valley’s remarkable travertine formations. We will then take a path to the right and continue slightly uphill, making a short stop at Udziro Lake before proceeding toward the ruins of Zakagori Fortress, where spectacular views of the valley await.
Truso Valley is known for its remarkable travertine formations, ancient towers, and traditional stone houses. After the hike, we will continue to Kazbegi. Overnight at the hotel.
Duration of hike: 6–7 hours, approximately 22 km
Difficulty level: Moderate
We will follow a mountain trail leading gradually uphill through alpine meadows and open highland terrain. As we gain elevation, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged, with rocky slopes and panoramic views of Mount Kazbek and the surrounding peaks of the Greater Caucasus on a clear day. The trail continues toward the glacier, passing through an impressive high-altitude landscape where the vastness of the mountains becomes particularly striking. After reaching the glacier area, situated at 3,300 m above sea level, we will take some time to enjoy the spectacular scenery before returning along the same trail to the parking point.
We will then drive back to our hotel in Kazbegi for overnight.
This challenging hike is suitable for physically fit and experienced hikers. Travelers may opt for a shorter route, ending at Café 360°, with panoramic views of Gergeti Glacier and Mount Kazbek. The shortened hike covers approximately half the full distance.
Duration of hike: approximately 8–10 hours
Uphill hike from 2,170 m to 3,300 m
Hiking distance: approximately 20 km round trip
Difficulty level: Challenging
After completing the ascent, we will continue along a flatter trail through the valley toward Lake Tina. As we progress, breathtaking mountain scenery will unfold before us, with the impressive peaks of the Greater Caucasus providing a spectacular backdrop.
After enjoying the views and taking photographs, we will return to our vehicle along the same trail, following the Chaukhistskali River.
We will then continue our journey to Tbilisi, where we will be dropped off at the hotel.
