An 8-day Georgia Hiking Tour is an exciting journey through the picturesque mountains of the Caucasus, along steep slopes and through gorges to ancient temples, fortresses and remote villages. This tour offers excellent hikes of moderate difficulty with a pleasant elevation gain, and on some days they will be interspersed with transfers through scenic places and excursions to historical monuments of Georgia.
Your route will begin with your arrival in Tbilisi and an introduction to its best tourist attractions. On the second day, you will travel along serpentine roads to Kazbegi, where the Gergeti Temple stands on a mountain slope. You will hike up to the temple and return to the village for the night. The next two days are devoted to radial trips to the Truso and Juta valleys. On the fifth day, a trip to Shatili via the Ananuri fortress is planned - this will be a short break to give your legs a rest before the new mountainous region of the Caucasus. The final two days will be devoted to hiking through the mountain villages of Khevsureti: you will see the impressive stone towers of the fortified complexes of Shatili and Mutso, learn the tragic history of the Anatori necropolis, and reach the Abudelauri Lakes, famous for their crystal clarity.
Georgia Hiking Tour is a wonderful way to explore both the nature and culture of Georgia in one trip. Take a look at the details of each day's hike along with other useful information, and start preparing for the adventures in the Caucasus.

Arrival in Tbilisi. You will be met by our driver and transferred to the hotel for check-in after 14:00. We will meet your guide in the hotel lobby to start Tbilisi city tour. We will begin at Metekhi Сhurch and the monument to Vakhtang Gorgasali, the legendary founder of Tbilisi. Visit Narikala Fortress to enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the city. Walk down to the district of sulfur and pass by the only mosque in Tbilisi. Stroll through the Sharden area, full of narrow streets with cozy cafés, wine-tasting bars, and souvenir shops, and breathe in the history of Old Tbilisi. We will then visit Sioni Cathedral, Anchiskhati Basilica, and the famous Rezo Gabriadze Theatre’s clock tower, before crossing the Bridge of Peace to Rike Park.
Overnight at the hotel.
Duration of sightseeing tour: 3-4 hours Driving distance: 20 km
Day 2: Tbilisi – Jvari – Kazbegi – hike to Gergeti Church

Meet your guide and driver and head to Jvari Church, a true architectural masterpiece of the early Medieval Period overlooking from the top of the hill the confluence of Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers and Svetitskhoveli, the main cathedral of Mtskheta. Continue further on the Georgian Military Highway up North towards the border with Russia. We will then drive over the Cross Pass and make a short stop at the Soviet-era “People’s Friendship” mountain viewpoint overlooking a deep gorge of Caucasus Mountain range. We will then reach our destination for today – Kazbegi, a small town with views of Mount Kazbek (or Mkinvari) 5054 m, the seventh highest peak in the Caucasus Mountains.
On arrival, we will hike to Gergeti Trinity Church (~60 min / 2 km one way, altitude gain 1800-2200 m). Overnight at the hotel.
Trail length 4 km, Elevation gain 400 m, Route type: loop
Meals: breakfast, lunch
Day 3: Hiking in Truso Valley

After breakfast we will drive to Truso Valley to start hiking from Kvemo Okrokana village to the ruins of Zakagori Fortress. Enjoy spectacular views of the valley, including some remarkable travertine formations, ancient towers, and ruined houses. Walk from Kvemo Okrokana village to the ruins of Zakagori Fortress and back. After the hike, we will return to our hotel in Kazbegi. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 4: Hiking in Juta Valley

After breakfast, drive deeper into the mountains from Kazbegi to Juta on a narrow road through the spectacular Sno Valley. Arrive at Juta (2150 m), a quaint village which awaits adventurous travelers. Start with an intensive hike on a steep ascent (~30 min) before continuing your trek in the valley. Enjoy stunning views of beautiful mountain backdrops at an elevation of 2500 meters above sea level.
After our hike, we will return to Kazbegi for a relaxing afternoon.
Trail length ~9-11 km, Elevation gain ~500-700 m, Route type: Loop
Meals: breakfast
Day 5: Kazbegi – Ananuri – Shatili

In the morning, we will drive to the historical region of Khevsureti (200 km, ~5 h).
We will stop on the way at Ananuri complex, a former residence of Argveti Dukes. The complex features churches and towers dating back to the 16-17th centuries, beautifully overlooking the Jinvali reservoir. As we enter Khevsureti, our road will gradually climb up to a height of 2,676 m at the Datvisjvari Pass. The view from here is one of Georgia’s best – steep mountain ridges covered with lush green grass, with the Arghuni River’s crystal-clear waters flowing below. You may also notice flocks of sheep casually grazing. After crossing the Pass, descend into the heart of Khevsureti. This historical-ethnographic region is famous for its highland communities that lived in massive, fortified stone villages and produced some of Georgia’s best warriors. Arrive in the historic village of Shatili, with its spectacular stone buildings rising like a fairy-tale castle over a tiny modern village. The village has a couple of basic guesthouses that each offer rooms with shared toilets and showers and dining rooms serving simple Georgian food. Dinner and overnight at the guesthouse.
Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner
Day 6: Shatili – Anatori – Mutso – Roshka

Start the morning with coffee and a simple homemade breakfast before heading to Anatori Necropolis. We will follow the road on foot (3 km, including 150 m uphill and 210 m downhill, duration: ~40 min, difficulty: easy). The hike is a good opportunity to admire the surrounding nature – pristine mountains, quiet forests, and the blue waters of Arghuni River that flows along the road. After arriving at Anatori, take a walking tour of the tombs (which still house the villagers’ bones) and the ruins of the village. From Anatori, continue walking along the main road to the Mutso Fortress, which stands on a hill in the middle of a mountainous valley (8.5 km, including 500 m uphill and 680 m downhill, duration: 3 hours, difficulty: easy). The route to the foot of the Mutso Hill follows the Arghuni, which changes here from a shallow, quietly flowing channel into a powerful, rapid mountain stream. On the way you’ll encounter a couple of now largely abandoned villages, where you’ll have the chance to see examples of the region’s typical old, rural architecture. The effort climbing up to explore the fortress is worthwhile as the view from the top is breath-taking! After exploring Mutso Fortress, walk down to the foot of the hill to meet your vehicle and drive to the village of Roshka (60 km, 2 hours). We will spend the night in a local guesthouse where delicious dinner will await us. Overnight in a private room in a guesthouse.
Trail length 11.5 km, Elevation gain 500 m, Route type: one way
Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner
Day 7: Roshka – Abudelauri Lakes – Tbilisi

After breakfast, start hiking along the Roshka Valley towards the Abudelauri Lakes (16 km round-trip). The trail starts off easily, with an easily visible, gradually inclining path. After 6 km you’ll reach Green Lake, with Blue Lake 300 m further on. After this, the hike becomes more challenging as the trail becomes steeper and is covered with stones and rubble. However, those who complete this challenge will be rewarded with a view of the White Lake, which is located at the foot of Mount Chaukhi at an altitude of 2,812 m. After spending some time relaxing at the White Lake, hike back to Roshka to our vehicle for our return drive to Tbilisi (~4 hours). Drop off at your hotel.
Trail length 16 km, Elevation gain 800 m, Route type: loop
Meals: breakfast, lunchbox
