Desintegration of the USSR

In August 1991 after the coup the power in the country went to the State Emergency Committee. However, the democratic opposition headed by Boris Yeltsin, the future President, confronted the Committee and in December 1991 in Belovezhskaya Pushcha (Byelorussia) the leaders of Russia, the Ukraine and Belarus declared the USSR disintegration and independent development of each of the republics. On December 25, 1991 Gorbachev resigned. The USSR ceased to exist. One year before the disintegration on June 12, 1990 the Congress of People’s deputies of the Russian Federation adopted the declaration of independence. In December 1993 the Constitution of the Russian Federation was adopted.
