The two-day Fergana Valley Heritage tour offers a short but rewarding journey into eastern Uzbekistan, combining an introduction to traditional Uzbek crafts with the region’s history. Along the way, you can follow the full process of producing soft silk fabrics, learn more about the art of pottery-making, and visit the main historical sights of Kokand.
The tour begins with a flight from Tashkent to Fergana. The first stop is Margilan, known for its silk workshops. From there, the route continues with a short drive to Rishtan, one of the main centres of ceramics in Uzbekistan. The day ends with a journey to Kokand. The second day is devoted to Kokand, once the capital of a vast khanate in the Fergana Valley. In the evening, you return to Tashkent by train.
This Fergana Valley tour is well suited to travellers who want a fuller picture of Uzbekistan, beyond the better-known routes through Samarkand and Bukhara. It will also appeal to those interested in traditional crafts and handmade work. For visitors staying in Tashkent, it is also a good option for a short trip to somewhere different.
Tour itinerary:
In Margilan, the tour begins with a visit to a small family-run silk workshop (Margilan Silk), where you can observe the entire process – from the processing of silkworm cocoons to the production of the finished fabric. You will then visit the Crafts Centre, which produces goods under the Golden Silk brand. There, you will be able to see the production of high-quality velvet and traditional silk carpets. The Crafts Centre also has a museum section. The workshops and reception rooms are decorated in traditional Uzbek style. Lunch will be served in one of these rooms.
After lunch, the journey continues to the town of Rishtan (50 km, 1 hour), renowned for its ceramic traditions. The tour includes a visit to the art studio of ceramist Rustam Usmanov, where you can observe the traditional process of making ceramics in the Rishtan style. You will also have the opportunity to see his personal collection in a private museum.
The day concludes with a short drive to Kokand (40 km, 1 hour). Overnight at the Silk Road Hotel.
