Small Group Georgia Hiking Tour – a journey into the world of the Caucasus Mountains, where snow-capped peaks rise beside temples and ancient fortress ruins, and trails lead to some of the most picturesque and dramatic landscapes. You will not only enjoy invigorating hikes in nature, but also a series of excursions to well-known historical sites in Georgia.
The tour begins with your arrival in Tbilisi and an introduction to its main landmarks. On the second day, you will travel along a scenic road to Kazbegi, where the Gergeti Temple stands on the mountainside. You will hike up to the temple and return the same way to the village for the night. Then you will spend two days on radial hikes – to Truso Valley and Juta Valley. On the fifth day, you will travel to Shatili via Ananuri – a pause to give your legs a rest. The next two days will be devoted to hiking through the mountain villages of the Khevsureti region. You will see the ancient fortified settlements of Shatili and Muts, with their striking stone towers, learn about the tragic history of the Anatori necropolis, and reach the renowned crystal-clear lakes of Abudelauri.
The Small Group Georgia Hiking Tour is an excellent way to discover the country's nature and culture in a single trip. It is also an opportunity to meet fellow travellers who appreciate hiking in scenic landscapes as much as you do. Choose your preferred date and set off on this year's remarkable journey.

Day 2: Tbilisi – Jvari – Kazbegi – hike to Gergeti Church

Meet your guide and driver and depart for Jvari Church, a true architectural masterpiece of the Early Medieval period, situated on a hilltop overlooking the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers and Svetitskhoveli, the main cathedral of Mtskheta. Continue along the Georgian Military Highway north towards the Russian border. Drive over the Cross Pass and make a short stop at the Soviet-era “People’s Friendship” mountain viewpoint, overlooking a deep gorge in the Caucasus mountain range.
Continue to today’s destination – Kazbegi, a small town offering views of Mount Kazbek (also known as Mkinvari), 5,054 m, the seventh highest peak in the Caucasus Mountains.
Upon arrival, hike to Gergeti Trinity Church (approximately 60 minutes / 2 km one way, altitude gain from 1,800 to 2,200 m). Overnight at the hotel.

After breakfast, drive to Truso Valley to begin your hike from Kvemo Okrokana village to the ruins of Zakagori Fortress. Along the way, enjoy spectacular views of the valley, with its remarkable travertine formations, ancient towers, and abandoned stone houses. The trail leads from Kvemo Okrokana village up to the ruins of Zakagori Fortress and follows the same route back.

After breakfast, drive deeper into the mountains from Kazbegi to Juta along a narrow road through the spectacular Sno Valley. Arrive in Juta (2,150 m), a picturesque village that attracts adventurous travellers. Begin with a steep ascent of approximately 30 minutes before continuing your hike further into the valley. Enjoy striking views of dramatic mountain scenery at an elevation of around 2,500 metres above sea level.
After the hike, return to Kazbegi for a relaxing afternoon.
Trail length 9-11 km, Elevation gain 500-700 m, Route type: loop
Meals: breakfast
Day 5: Kazbegi – Ananuri – Shatili

In the morning, drive to the historic region of Khevsureti (200 km, approximately 5 hours). On the way, stop at the Ananuri complex, the former residence of the Argveti Dukes. The complex includes churches and defensive towers dating from the 16th–17th centuries, set above the scenic Jinvali Reservoir. As you enter Khevsureti, the road gradually climbs to an elevation of 2,676 m at the Datvisjvari Pass. The panorama from here is among the finest in Georgia – steep mountain ridges covered in lush green grass, with the crystal-clear waters of the Arghuni River flowing below. You may also see flocks of sheep grazing along the slopes.
After crossing the pass, descend into the heart of Khevsureti. This historic and ethnographic region is known for its highland communities, who once lived in massive fortified stone villages and were regarded as some of Georgia’s finest warriors. Arrive in the historic village of Shatili, where dramatic stone buildings rise above a small modern settlement, creating the impression of a medieval fortress complex.
The village has a few basic guesthouses offering rooms with shared toilets and showers, as well as dining rooms serving simple Georgian cuisine. Dinner and overnight at the guesthouse.
Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner
Day 6: Shatili – Anatori – Mutso – Roshka

Start the morning with coffee and a simple homemade breakfast before heading to Anatori Necropolis. Follow the road on foot (3 km, including 150 m uphill and 210 m downhill, duration: approximately 40 minutes, difficulty: easy). The walk offers an opportunity to admire the surrounding landscape – pristine mountains, quiet forests, and the blue waters of the Arghuni River flowing alongside the road.
Upon arrival in Anatori, take a walking tour of the tombs, which still contain the villagers’ bones, as well as the ruins of the former settlement. From Anatori, continue along the main road towards Mutso Fortress, which stands on a hill in the middle of a mountain valley (8.5 km, including 500 m uphill and 680 m downhill, duration: 3 hours, difficulty: easy). The route to the foot of Mutso Hill follows the Arghuni River, which here transforms from a shallow, gently flowing channel into a powerful mountain stream.
Along the way, pass several largely abandoned villages, where you can observe examples of the region’s traditional rural architecture. The climb up to explore the fortress is well rewarded, as the view from the top is breathtaking. After visiting Mutso Fortress, walk back down to the foot of the hill to meet your vehicle and drive to the village of Roshka (60 km, 2 hours).
Spend the night in a local guesthouse, where a homemade dinner will be served. Overnight in a private room in a guesthouse.
Trail length 11.5 km, Elevation gain 500 m, Route type: one way
Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner
Day 7: Roshka – Abudelauri Lakes – Tbilisi

After breakfast, begin hiking through the Roshka Valley towards the Abudelauri Lakes (16 km round trip). The trail starts gently, following a clearly visible path with a gradual incline. After 6 km, reach the Green Lake, with the Blue Lake located a further 300 m ahead.
From this point, the hike becomes more demanding as the trail grows steeper and is covered with stones and loose rubble. Those who continue will be rewarded with views of the White Lake, situated at the foot of Mount Chaukhi at an altitude of 2,812 m.
After spending time at the White Lake, hike back to Roshka to meet your vehicle and return to Tbilisi (approximately 4 hours). Drop-off at your hotel.
Trail length 16 km, Elevation gain 800 m, Route type: loop
Meals: breakfast, lunchbox

Walk down to the district of sulphur baths and pass by the only mosque in Tbilisi. Continue through the Sharden area, with its narrow streets lined with cosy cafés, wine-tasting bars, and souvenir shops, and experience the atmosphere of Old Tbilisi.
