The Secret Trails of Georgia is an 11-day tour through some of the country’s most remote and spectacular landscapes. It is one of the most unusual and rewarding Georgia tours, offering the opportunity to explore little-known mountain regions and some of the most scenic hiking routes in the Caucasus.
Along the way, you will enjoy a sightseeing tour of Tbilisi, discover the culture of the Kists in Pankisi Valley, and visit Batsara Nature Reserve, home to the world’s largest ancient yew forest. The route also passes the three Abudelauri Lakes – Green, Blue and White – each named after the distinctive colour of its water.
Another natural highlight of the tour is Truso Valley, renowned for its striking orange-and-white travertine formations and mineral springs. A hike to Gergeti Trinity Church, one of Georgia’s most iconic landmarks, rewards you with breathtaking views of the majestic 5,054-metre Mount Kazbek.
The Secret Trails of Georgia Tour combines cultural discoveries with mountain drives and memorable hikes. It is designed for travellers who want to experience not only Georgia’s best-known sights but also its lesser-known highland regions.

In the morning, depart from Tbilisi to discover the hidden beauty of Pankisi Valley, a remote and culturally rich region nestled in the Caucasus Mountains. A beautiful road lies through Gombori Pass. Reach Pankisi. Home to the Kist community, descendants of Chechen settlers who have lived here for over two centuries, the valley offers a unique blend of history, tradition, and untouched nature. Today, visitors are greeted with warm hospitality, family-run guesthouses, and a way of life deeply connected to nature and heritage. During the tour, explore the village of Duisi, where you will visit both old and new mosques, offering insight into local culture and traditions. Experience the spiritual atmosphere of the valley, and if visiting on a Friday, witness the mesmerizing Zikr ritual, an ancient Sufi practice of rhythmic movement, chanting, and clapping. While in the valley, you will have an opportunity to experience traditional Chechen cuisine. You can taste dishes such as zhizhig-galnash (tender meat served with handmade dumplings), siskal (cornbread with a rich cottage cheese sauce), and chepalgash (stuffed flatbreads), along with Chechen-style khinkali. Visit Khadori Waterfall and enjoy its pristine natural surroundings. Free time in the valley. You can also rent mountain bikes to explore Pankisi Valley. Dinner and overnight at a local guesthouse (shared facilities).
Duration of sightseeing tour: 5-6 hours

Day 4: Pankisi – Batsara Nature Reserve hike – Tbatana – Pankisi

Set in the north-western part of Pankisi Valley, Batsara Strict Nature Reserve covers over 5,500 hectares of untouched wilderness. Established in 1935, it was created to preserve its unique ecosystems, including rare yew forests and pristine natural landscapes. As a strictly protected area, the reserve is dedicated to conserving biodiversity in its purest form, while allowing only limited, low-impact visits. Accompanied by a local ranger, explore the reserve on foot along designated trails, immersing yourself in its unspoiled beauty. A 12-km round-trip hike (approximately 4-5 hours) takes you deep into the forest, where towering ancient trees, rich birdlife, and complete tranquility create a truly off-the-grid experience far from the usual tourist routes. After the hike, switch to a 4WD vehicle and ascend to Tbatana Mountain, where sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes await at an altitude of approximately 2300 meters. Following this day in nature, return to a guesthouse for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, say goodbye to Pankisi and head to Khevsureti. As you enter Khevsureti, the road gradually climbs to an elevation of 2,676 m at the Datvisjvari Pass. The panorama from here is among the finest in Georgia – steep mountain ridges covered in lush green grass, with the crystal-clear waters of the Arghuni River flowing below. You may also see flocks of sheep grazing along the slopes. After crossing the pass, descend into the heart of Khevsureti. This historic and ethnographic region is known for its highland communities, who once lived in massive fortified stone villages and were regarded as some of Georgia’s finest warriors. Arrive in the historic village of Shatili, where dramatic stone buildings rise above a small modern settlement, creating the impression of a medieval fortress complex. The village has a few basic guesthouses offering rooms with shared toilets and showers, as well as dining rooms serving simple Georgian cuisine. Dinner and overnight at the guesthouse.
Duration of sightseeing tour: 6-7 hours
Driving distance: 170 km

Day 6: Shatili – Anatori hike – Mutso hike – Roshka

Start the morning with coffee and a simple homemade breakfast before heading to Anatori Necropolis. Follow the road on foot (3 km, including 150 m uphill and 210 m downhill, duration: approximately 40 minutes, difficulty: easy). The walk offers an opportunity to admire the surrounding landscape – pristine mountains, quiet forests, and the blue waters of the Arghuni River flowing alongside the road. Upon arrival in Anatori, take a walking tour of the tombs, which still contain the villagers’ bones, as well as the ruins of the former settlement. From Anatori, continue along the main road towards Mutso Fortress, which stands on a hill in the middle of a mountain valley (8.5 km, including 500 m uphill and 680 m downhill, duration: 3 hours, difficulty: easy). The route to the foot of Mutso Hill follows the Arghuni River, which here transforms from a shallow, gently flowing channel into a powerful mountain stream. Along the way, pass several largely abandoned villages, where you can observe examples of the region’s traditional rural architecture. The climb up to explore the fortress is well rewarded, as the view from the top is breathtaking. After visiting Mutso Fortress, walk back down to the foot of the hill to meet your vehicle and drive to the village of Roshka (60 km, 2 hours). Spend the night in a local guesthouse, where a homemade dinner will be served. Overnight in a guesthouse.

After 6 km, reach the Green Lake, with the Blue Lake located a further 300 m ahead. From this point, the hike becomes more demanding as the trail grows steeper and is covered with stones and loose rubble. Those who continue will be rewarded with views of the White Lake, situated at the foot of Mount Chaukhi at an altitude of 2,812 m. After spending time at the White Lake, hike back to Roshka. Dinner and overnight in a guesthouse.

The complex includes churches and defensive towers dating from the 16th–17th centuries, set above the scenic Jinvali Reservoir. Continue along the Georgian Military Highway north towards the Russian border. Drive over the Cross Pass and make a short stop at the Soviet-era “People’s Friendship” mountain viewpoint, overlooking a deep gorge in the Caucasus mountain range. Continue to today’s destination – Kazbegi, a small town offering views of Mount Kazbek (also known as Mkinvari), 5,054 m, the seventh highest peak in the Caucasus Mountains.
